I just came across this link and think that it provides a very good account of information for beginners and experts alike on how to take care of your djing equipment.

One question that I have for everyone, what do you use to clean your records? I use rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth. I spin my record on 78 RPMs and clean from the inside out. What products do you use (and list the ingredients if you can) and what technique do you use?

I'm actually too worried about the potentially distructive properites of rubbing alcohol. I read somewhere that the best way to clean your vinyl is to use a moist cotton cloth. It should'nt be dripping water or anything, just a little wet. So I usually use my T-shirts and wet them a little and start in the middle to go out like you do. I still get tons of dust and lint on my needles but it's the safest way I know how. I also make sure I don't start spinning if the vinyl is still moist, so I wipe it a second time with the dry side of my cotton T-shirts. I'd rather not spend money on vinyl cleaners, but I'm open for new home methods.

I'm a chemist and so trust me when I say that you don't have to worry about that ;) I've read several articles in audiophile magazines that also use rubbing alcohol. The container that you buy in the store is only 70% anyway, the rest being water. One thing to note is that if you do use water, make sure that it is PURE water and not tap water. There are an alarming amount of salts in regular water and even stuff that goes through purifiers (it just replaces the hard metal salts with NaCl (table salt). The water must be distilled and use ONLY distilled water.

i got one of them, they are rather good, and they won't damage your record like any liquid will :)

woohoo!! I have a distilled water dispenser in my house... guess that's the stuff I'll be using, along with a smooth cloth to clean my vinyl. That stuff about the salt damaging your vinyls is totally true...hapenned to a friend of mine.

How much would a vinyl cleaning kit run me? CDN$$
