is it when the dj doesnt dj and just plays a sound file? |

DAT tapes are tapes for recordin high quality sound on. mainly used for samples & to send demo's to labels etc... they can fit lots and lots of sound on at a much higher quality than CD or MD..

Yeah, it's Digital Audio Tape.
It's not much higher quality really, 48khz as opposes to 44khz for CD. It's just that it was the first method of recording digitally and has stuck around since then for mastering. |

i thought it could store 77khz floating point wave sound with no quality loss.. or did i make that up in my head? :)

| Yeah, you made that up. DAT stores 16-bit PCM stereo at 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz. |
