it all depends on what you intent to use it for...

if its strictly for listening to mp3s, and if you're always going to be able to load new stuff on it, then go for the mp3 player

if you want to record live sets, are going on long trips often and want to be able to burn different discs so you can listen to more than just whats in your player at the moment, go for the MD

i'd stay away from mp3 cd players, just cuz of their size, but thats me...

cheers guys i might have a look on ebay later.

it depends. If you want something you can move with, say, go for a jog, then an mp3cd player will not do, nor will a HD based mp3 player. a MD will be pretty good in this respect, i took mine snowboarding and it never skipped once..

if you will just be sitting on the beach drinking beer, then get an mp3cd player, or a nomad jukebox.

I've got an MP3 player I never use because it can't hold . I sold my MD player (was cool until the MP3 players came out), and now I have an mp3/cd player, which I prefer over everything, I can burn 200 songs on it, it's small and portable and lasts a long ass time on only 2 AA batteries. That's what I would reccomend, but if you've got the cash, go for an iPod, that's the next thing I'm probably going to get. But right now I have my portable mp3/cd player and my mp3/cd player in my car.

Here's my opinion:

I prefer MDs... Most of them have a mic-in line. which can be very useful..
I use it to record live set at clubs or even into class when I feel like sleeping. :toothless
if you have a line-in on it... you can plug it directly to you're pc or even your mixer and mix and record up to 5h of set !! (LP4 mode)
Battery life is way better or MD than on a mp3 player.
just take a look at the sony models that let you have up to 56h of non stop listening.
You can edit your tracks on the MD... like changing its playlist order
or split or attach tracks. (depends on the model)
Unlimited use of your discs... you can save and deleted the stuff on it as many times as you want.
And one important thing... It just doesn'T skip ! I have a Sharp and its not even on the anti-skip mode... I run, jump(not too high :) ), with it and it doesn'T skip !
what more do you want ? MD is the !

id say go for MD, i have one, and i love the fact how you can record enething u want, tv music, mixers, pc, tape player, list goes on, it never skips, long life battery, can edit order in which songs are in, can replace one by one, i just love it fulstop :D

I would just buy an MP3 player. You dont have to worry about discs and the players can hold A LOT OF STUFF!
40 gigs!!
Plus now they have USB2 and firewire links so it doesnt take that long for file transfers

my issues are these...

i need to be able to store a bunch of livesets.

the ability to 'seek' within the set fast, ie: fast forward should be like 5 seconds to fast forward one minute.

mic-in for recording lectures in class

good battery life

* loud strong volume. -- MD problem => often find MD's never really go loud and tease you with the volume, almost going where u need it to...

these are my main issues.. I thought 'Mp3 CD' because its cheap and the medium can record like 7 nice sets on a cd which is great. but i dont like listening to sets too many times so i would have lots of 'coasters' so perhaps MP3 ipod? but how does it rank up in the above catagories?

hmmm

anyone a PROFESSIONAL here that can answer these questions? I have the money to throw down for the BEST most satisfying system for my needs, I just want to be happy with the product!

anyone got recommendations??

If you really want an iPod, I'd wait just a little bit longer. The next generation is not far off, and supposedly will do a lot better with battery life - my major gripe with iPods. So what if you have 20 gigs of mp3's if the battery dies on you and you don't have a recharger? It's a proprietary battery.

MD is cool. I have a player/recorder and like it a lot. The crystal clear recording is definitely a bonus. But the mp3 transfer is a pain in the ass because of Sony's copy protection and file transfer software.

Solid state mp3 players are nice because they're indestructible, but some of them can't even hold a single DJ set.

mp3/cd players are nice because they have super-long battery life, and you can get several sets on a cd. But they're the biggest of the bunch.

The point of all this is that one player probably isn't going to satisfy everyone. I have all of the above, and I use them all, because no one's come up with a way to carry mp3's that gives you all of the benefits of the different kinds of players combined.

mini disc player= more baggage to carry
mp3 player= happiness :D
