always design so that its still useable at 800x600, cuz alot of people still use taht res. but makes ure its still useable at high resoultions as well, like 1600x1200. |

If you are designing a website that has to be seen by the general public, and used by them, rather than just for friends whatever then you need to design for an 800x600px screen.
That gives you (under windows & mac, ie, nn, op & moz) a piece of screen real-estate 750px wide.
Height-wise you'll get 430px before the 'fold' - which is the point that a browser will add a vertical scrollbar at that resolution.

If you are designing a site for yourself you can go up to 1024x768px, which gives you a piece of screen-real estate somewhere around 970x590px. |
