XP's built in firewall?

HEy guys, general question about Windows XP Pro built in Firewall.
I used ZoneAlarm back in the day and found out that it was the cause of a lot of my grief when I started having computer problems. Right now I have no firewall and I have yet to buy a router.
How well does XP's internal firewall work? Any glitches that Mr.Gates has purposly set into it, or does it work as well as any store bought firewall?

I host a lot of online gaming too, wondering if it will block my ability to do that unless I turn it off.

Cheers.

Dont take my word for it but i heard alot about it being realy crap and that it stil leaves alot of security holes.

It's really simple, you can't change any of its settings and most of the time it just messes things up.

its . infact its so it may as well just not be there.

Yeah, you'd better disable it.

its totaly useless, it even blocks file transfers with msn messenger (you think that 2 microsoft products would have at least been compatable!) check out black ice defender - ill try and get you a link

I went completey insane trying to fix the firewall to enable file transfers in windows XP, ok heres the deal ,

MSN MESSENGER any version [ Ok if you have disabled the whole firewall then you should be able to recieve files , but cannot send. Ok if you have the firewall on you cant send or recieve, now you can connect to MSN because it uses UDP connection yes TCP big evil brother UDP is faster and more unsecure, anyways we need to send some files , heres how to do it, open up the connexions tab on your dial-up or right click on the connection in your sys tray and goto properties/firewall tab then select advanced i think , and there is a few connection ports , what u need to do is enable the MSN port i am unsure of the port number but this needs to be open !! , sending a file to someone uses TCP connection and hence the XP Firewall will pick it up even if its on or not. make sure you have no other firewalls running, i had black ice defender running and i thought i uninstalled it about 6 months ago but it was hiding in my advanced proccesses tab, bitch eh. dont use two firewalls unless you know what your doing !!!

MIRC File Transfers , this is just the same problem as the MSN Glitch , you can recieve but cant send. lol, ok goto the same place and add 3 ports all using 127.0.0.1 , add IDENTD = PORT 113 , Then DCC Port 4000 - 4000 then another DCC Port 4001-4001, goto MIRC Options and click look up Server not IP address or you can leave them both blank, in the DCC PORT option in MIRC/option , use 4000-4001 and everything should work ok. send me a PM if you have any problems

black ice can be downloaded from here - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1194

also try kerio personal firewall 3 - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=738

both will require some setting up, but once setup will offer far more protection than the windows xp firewall, which is quite simply not effective
