Hey Insomniac,

I'm currently going to college in Worcester (about 45 minutes west of Boston) and I've see Paul van Dyk the last two times he's played at Avalon. Both times Paul and Avalon were fantastic. Avalon was recently voted "Best Superclub in America" by Club Magazine, it holds over 3,000 people, has an absolutely mind blowing lighting system complete with the biggest laser I've ever seen, and is the flagship location for the "Avalon" speaker system. In short, Avalon is definitely the place to be if you're into high quality clubbing. Just as a matter of opinion though, Avalon is more of a "progressive" club, moreso than a "trance" club. That's not to say that they don't have trance DJs coming in on a regular basis, but most, if not all their residents spin progressive house (albeit extremely high-quality progressive house for the most part). Speaking of their residents, two of them are extremely well known in progressive circles and they were actually quite impressive to see when they opened up for Paul van Dyk the times I went. John Debo has releases on Bedrock and teams up with Steve Porter to form "Deported". Ali Ajami has come a long way over the years with his brand of progressive and was recently featured as a guest DJ on John Digweed's Kiss FM radio show.

Avalon is also connected to a number of other, much smaller clubs, such as Axis and Embassy. Basically, the club nights go like this:

Thursday:
Avalon - Hip Hop (frequently gets big name hip-hop DJs like Funkmaster Flex, Scribble, etc)
Axis - Square One Boston - Best Progressive night in New England most likely (John Debo, Steve Porter, Chris Fortier), extremely laid-back, "Doing it for the nod" atmosphere,(only $5 to get in)

Friday:
Avalon - "Avaland" night, big DJ's, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk, and Danny Howells in coming weeks
Axis - Hip Hop night for Axis

Saturday:
Avalon - "College night" DJ Nailz tries his best to cater to a less mature crowd while playing fairly respectable progressive house. Has Louie Devito as monthly resident *shudder*. But if he's your cup of tea, great night I bet.
Axis - Beats me, Probably more Hip Hop

So that's Avalon in a nutshell. All nights are 19+, and it's located on Landsdown street right behind Fenway Park.

OK, I hope to see you there in the coming year!

Oh yah, Whiskers, I was there last time PvD was here, and he did indeed destroy the place, but it was definitey packed!
