Learning from scratch...REASON 2.0

hey guys,
A while ago I got a copy of Reason 2.0. I haven never produced any sort of music before so I have started from scratch.
I fired up reason and someone showed me a little something about how to use the drum machine. So I know how to make bass lines and percussion and lay them into sequence on a track. the problem I'm having now is that I'm in the "What do the rest of these buttons do" stage. The only things I know how to use in Reason are the drum machine and the mixer.
So now I would like to start making melodies and learning how to use the other devices in reason (I have no idea how to use the subtractor). So i was wondering how you guys think the best way is to learn this. Do you think that it would be best to buy the Reason 2.0 manual (the little orange book for $50, it looked pretty thourough) or are there some online tutorials that you guys can point out? (couldn't find any good ones on reasonstation.net)
This stuff is pretty foreign so as simple as possible!

Well first off, do you have a midi controller? I think the answer to this is no so I will continue under that assumption.
To get the subtractor to make a sound, you need to send midi data into it. You can do this with a midi controller. Or, seeing as though you don't have one, with the matrix pattern sequencer.
1. Create an empty rack.
2. Create a mixer
3. create a reverb fx, delay fx, distortion & phaser (just four randomly chosen fx)
These effects are now controlled by the sends for each channel in the mixer. If you turn up send 1 on channel 1, it will apply reverb to that sound.
4. create a redrum (you already know how to use this)
5. Create a subtractor
6. create a matrix pattern sequencer
The grid displays the different notes for each 1/16 note. If you click on a particular square, that sqare will light up which means that for this particular 1/16th note, that key will be hit. Under the grid, there is a bar that can be raised for each 1/16th note. Click on this bar to raise it up. Drag the bar all the way down to the bottom to turn that 1/16th note off.
7. Load in a patch into the subtractor by hitting the little folder icon on the left of the instrument. This will put a "sound" (patch) into it. Hit run on the matrix sequencer and it will play the subtractor synth.
8. read the manual cos I'm not typing any more. If you don't want to pay $50 bucks, go to the help section in the program and go through that manual. |
