| do you have to spin vinyl? :conf: |

| Dj Flesch |
| The thing that I hate the most about this comp is that the rules are very very vague! It doesn't tell you what meduims you are limited to if any, if you can use mixing progs etc, how far over the time limit or under the limit you can go, if you can enter more than once etc etc. poop. |

yeah i know flesch....
i dont have my own decks, i have to go to a friend's
house to mix on his CDJs... either way, i wanna enter,
just for the hell of it... |

you know, compile a list of questions, and show up in #GDJB on
irc.webchat.org, suring the Global DJ Broadcast Show, and you
can ask markus schulz himself, he'll shed some light on the
situation... |

Subject: RE: questions about the dj contest...
Thanks for the quick reply…ok here it goes
The 55 min track length… is that a plus or minus or an absolute value? How far over or under are we allowed to go?
[Global DJ Broadcast]
Aproxiamtel 55 mins. After that amount of time, we cut to commercials, so if you go over that, and you win the contest, the song will just get cut off.
Bad language: ok I understand what can and cant be played on the radio, however is it ok if I scratch over bad words or something? Its just one line really... Also along that line, is it acceptable to have a song that has a bad word in its name? even with the censoring etc? how would you like me to make the track list with one song with a bad word in the title since I understand that the tracklist will be posted
[Global DJ Broadcast]
That is fine, just remember what can't be aired on the radio. We are trying to ensure that these sets are broadcast ready by requesting that they include no bad language.
Is there a rule about what mediums to use? Personally I am going to use all vinyl, however on behalf of a lot of other people, I was wondering what your rules were about using cdr’s or using computer programs or unreleased tracks etc… I know a lot of songs can be downloaded and mixed using programs like traktor or burned on cds to use with cdjs etc. I guess I am also a bit concerned about copyrights and stuff especially on an unreleased song or something. I just don’t want anyone I know getting in trouble because they didn’t know what the fine print was about what they are allowed to include in their mixes
[Global DJ Broadcast]
We encourage the use of legitimate purchased forms of media, and not downloaded mp3's, that is why we said "sound quality" will be one of the things judged. We will be able to tell if a track is from an mp3 or from vinyl. If someone has entered a set and it is 192 or 128kbs mp3's, then that will be taken into consideration when judging it. We are not saying you cant use mp3's, but if it comes down to a tie between two sets, the one with the cleanest quality will win.
And I guess on the topic of computers… I know that sound quality will be judged but I was wondering what the definintion of “sound quality” is in your rule beucase some say that mixes that are recorded and then mastered…tweaked…etc sound good but personally I think that remastering mixes on the computer takes away from the skill…so I guess im just wondering if the quality that you are looking for is for us bedroom djs to actually produce a cd or to record a true live mix onto a cd… because even the best djs use computers to remaster their cds before they release them for sale
[Global DJ Broadcast]
Computors are not a problem, just remember computors do not have the creativity that a talented DJ has, and creativity is one of the judging points. If it comes down to a tie, and one set is nicely mixed but the mixes sound sterile with no personality, that will be noticed.
I know these questions are trivial but I am trying to get an idea of what you are looking as an anchor for me before I begin… because just saying that the mix has to be 55 mins with no bad words is something very broad to ask..
Ok and this may be a dumb question but… who is going to be judging?
[Global DJ Broadcast]
Markus Schulz will be judge, and he knows the music very well, you will be able to read his reviews on our website.
I think that’s it for now, I hope you don’t mind if I chime in again if I get stumped
Thanks again for your time and fast reply
Sincerely
Jay

Subject: questions about the dj contest...
Hey I am unclear about some of the rules. Some of my questions may be trivial; however, I want to make sure that I am in the clear before I do anything so before I start….is this the correct email address to ask questions? I have looked all over the gdjb forums and tranceaddict forums and I have not seen any of my questions answered… thanks a lot for your time. If this is the right place I will reply with some relevant questions
Thanks
