| with gay marriages being legalized in Ontario Canada, and the anti-sodomy laws being struck down, maybe we'll eventually see equality between all races and genders and sexual orientations in the time to come. Gives hope! |

gay sex now legal in USA... my god your country is behind the times. But that's what happens with Republicans in office. They look back, not forwards. |

Sigh ... gay sex was legal in the majority of the United States. Only 5 or 6 states actually made it illegal, mostly in the bible belt south. So although gay sex WAS already legal in most of the US, the supreme court has overruled state laws and made it legal everwhere in the US. However, this is hardly an issue divided by party lines, no such legislation ever came forth when the democrats were in office ... |

Not to be nitpicky, but anti-Sodomy laws which included consentual homosexual sex was outlawed in 17 states.
Ah yes, we here in Kansas are so very proud of our piece of Phred Phelps. Nothing like a little hate with the word God behind it - really propels this man into instant stardom. I always loved it when he came up onto KU campus and had all his lovely signs out to protest Lebi-Gay week. It was such a joy to see him and his family members (including little kids) hold educational signs such as "God Hates Fags", and "Gay-U" (a little spinoff on "KU" - isin't that cute?). And, of course, it was really nice to see this piece of wearing a KU baseball cap when he took his ed-up family to Wyoming to protest at Mathew Shephard's funeral. Yes, he is truly one of the many great representatives of Kansas. |

I guess we're both wrong ... it seems to be 13 states.

As recently as 1960, every state had an anti-sodomy law, according to The Associated Press. In 37 states, the statutes have been repealed by lawmakers or blocked by state courts, the AP reported.
Of the 13 states with sodomy laws, four -- Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri -- prohibit oral and anal sex between same-sex couples. The other nine ban consensual sodomy for everyone: Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia.
|
Edit: And in actuallity only 4 states probably enforce the anti-sodomy laws since they are the only ones that discriminate against same sex sodomy. |

Even if only 4 states do that, it still throws America decades back compared to other civilized countries (think Europe). It's just like slavery and equal rights... America always seems to lag behind modern thought.
It seems a little hypocritical for us to accuse other countries like Iran of being backward and socially undemocratic, if we have similarly ridiculous backward social thinking in our own backyards. |

I agree it's backwards but these states rarely even enforce such common laws. The anti-sodomy common laws weren't even originally established to ward off or punish homosexuality. They were created to punish sexual deviants who molested or raped woman. The last time this issue even came up as a matter prosecuting homosexuals was in 1986. |
