everyone will tell you something different acording to taste... personally i think if you really want the most out of your system, whether you listen to trance or not, a dedicated sub makes the world of difference as long as you dont turnit up too loud.
As for branding, theres no hard and fast rule for whats 'the best'.. despite what other people tell you about various speakers, alipine, kenwood, pioneer and um... i cant remember the other one, are al basically the same because the parts all come from the same factory in taiwan.
6x9's in the back is pretty standard, but you definitely want somethign in the front too, makes SOO much difference, even if its only a pair of 6inch tweeters. |

Lol! Alpine are mid to low range car audio, if your looking for a good brand it has to be Rockford Fosgate or Boston Acoustics. They are sheer quality for sound, audiophiles rave about em. Bit expensive tho, but judging by that paycheck u got u will have no trubble purchasing them.
If you want more info goto www.caraudiodirect.co.uk There is a forum there and the people innit are well helpful. They also sell the cheapest equipment undercutting halfords, sextons etc, with free delivery. Its where i bought my stereo system, so they are pretty trustworthy. |

Ok here comes my opinion!
Coup, you will need to make some custom speaker brackets for the front, as you will need some sound coming from the front. As clubbers we are used to sound coming from all sides, and just hearing sound from behind you could piss you off :toothless
Basically to make custom doorbuilds, i would recommend buying some 13cm speakers. Once you've taken off your doorcard and cut a hole for the speaker to fit in, you need to make a ring of MDF for the speaker to sit in. This is so that the magnet will not intefere with the windows when you open them. Then you can spray the wood black to match the doorcard.
Amp-ing the 6x9's will definately boost there SQ and SPL. For example, if you have 6x9's with a 50W RMS rating, linked to your head unit, which is giving out approx 20RMS, and you turn it up, the 6x9's will suffer distortion, cos they are trying to reproduce loud sound without the power to back it up. So the speaker voicecoil will fry, and you will have no speakers!
As for a sub, there are a few options you have without taking up all your bootspace. You could either get 2 10" subs with Stealth boxes. Stealth boxes basically fit into the cubby holes by you rear wheels and will save you a LOT of space. Unfortunately they are very expensive. You could buy 1 8" or 10" sub in a standard box, and that will take up approx 30-40% of your space. Or there are the basstubes/active subwoofers which are small and efficient.
As for branding and stuff, my affliation is with my custom status :)
But i have experienced almost every soundsystem ever. The BEST ever, for both decent SPL and SQ are as follows: Audiobahn, JL Audio, Phoenix Gold and CDT Audio. Unless you have loaded parents, don't even consider them as they cost silly money. Unless you can convince one of the companies for sponsorship as the loudest Citroen AX in the world. :D
A lot of my friends use Alpine as there audio. It provides a good middle ground, and is relatively affordable, and there is the top end F#1 status stuff which is fantastic. My mate has BMW with bass provided by 4 Alpine Type R subs, and its all amp'd by ALpine V power amps. He has Rockford's as components and Kenwood 6x9's in the doors. I'll post a pic later.
My system is (obviously) all Sony Xplod. Now for some reasons, they are not rated very highly in the audio world. There head units (apart from the class leading Nakamichi's) are definatly top stuff. They boast many sound tuning features and various other gimmicks that are very nice. ALso, all Sony Amps are 2-Ohm compatible, which means that there power outputs can be doubled with the right sort of speakers.
I have an ACtive Black Panel MD head unit which powers some 10cm Xplod front speakers. I have one Sub-Out RCA which is currently running an Alpine Type R sub, but it will soon be 3 Xplod 12" Pentagon subs. They will be amp'd by XM502SX 2/1 channel amps, which providen 360W RMS, which is optimum for these subs. I've got a rear pre-out running 4 6x9's, 2 on the parcel shelf, and 2 in the boot as part of the install, and a front RCA running Sony components. I'm also thinking of fibreglassing the boot as well for a top quality install.
Also never disregard sound deadening. It can improve the sound in the car by no end. It will stop panels in your car shaking and thus slightly distorting what you hear. Key places to use sound deadening are in the boot and all the doors. For some reason, my bonnet vibrates like hell, but i can't do anything about that!
Now that was a bloody long post!
Any questions just ask! :D |

I dont want a sub, as they are too big, and are too basey for trance music, my mate has a sub and he cant hear the melody over the base, which is abit stupid.

what u on about?! i had two huge subs in two huge air-tight noxes in my boot and it was absolutly amazin! got some really got speakers in the front doors and put bass filters on them (they filter out the bass, hence the name so when it is extra loud they dont distort). also get some beasty 6x9s on the parcel shelf - JBL GTO series are minted - thats what i had.
if the bass is too loud, then u can always turn the subs down on the amp, durrrr!

these are supposed to be the best 6x9's on the readily available market. heard good stuff bout the kappas. ive got the top spec pioneer 6x9's and head unit and the sounds ok considerin no sub or amp. i personally think ur better to look local than places like maxpower etc. look in the journal coup and see if theres any cars in there that are ok. |

I have heard mixed reviews about these bad boys... some say its too cluttered with the bass... but i have heard infinity's 3/4 years back and they were good back then. Just want sommat to do now... cos i want to be able to get a few amp and subs to handle the bass, and let the speakers handle midtones and treble well without sounding too tinny or watered...
I'm still thinking of rockford fosgate or pheonix gold amps with JL WC03 12" subs... had one before it got nicked... sounds fat. Might just get a cheap song xplod amp for the time being, then again maybe not. Im running pioneer DEH or sommat 8400 mp3 cd unit. |

As 6x9's go, one has to think of their role in the car. If you have a sub and an amp already, there is almost no need for 6x9's. I have some on the back shelf as they were the first thing i got, and now that i have subs, there purpose is to provide a bit of mid-bass and treble in the back.
Ideally if you lot wanna get some good sound in the back get some good 17cm components and put em on the back shelf, or in the doors.
But if you REALLy want some 6x9's consider the Audiobahn 6x9's with 225W RMS! or the new transparent Blaupunkt ones. Sweet ones for sure! |

think it be quite a lot of work to a 206, trying to fit some 17cm components to the back :p
u ever worked with fibreglass to make pods and stuff? |
