Quagmire in Iraq?

Are we in a quagmire?
Upwards of 1 US soldier killed every day in Iraq.
Still no political government.
Crime, shooting, ambushes, missing soldiers, insurgency and resistance - and still no clear exit strategy. |

| I admit that things certainly going smoothly over there, but much of that(whether publicly stated or not) had to be expected. I think we're a LONG way from quagmire status though. 1 soldier a day is pretty insignificant when speaking in terms of wars. Nobody likes to see innocent people die, but from an objective stance, it's not going that bad yet. I hope it doesn't get much worse. |

It does look bad now, but I don't think anyone expected anything less than this. I mean, did anyone really think this would work?
Iraq: "Ok, you guys just invaded our country, killing hundreds or thousands of our youth (soldiers), unemploying the rest of the army, and are now calling the shots as if this is your country?"
The feeling of having your [beloved] country being invaded and occupied by a foreign nation, especially one that is your antithesis in culture and religion, is a profound feeling that many people don't have a taste for.
Powerful emotions get fired up -- is it any wonder, then, that the plans of government and military officials residing in a different world, thousands of kilometers away, will fail?
But, Eugene, to be fair, I'll say right now that it's a bit too early to write off a ticket for Iraq's future. After all, only a few months have passed since the invasion, and it's still early. Eventually, I'm sure that peace will ensue. As to what kind of peace that becomes, is uncertain, except for the inevitable Americanization of Iraq. Granted, I will not support such a peace, but in light of what is happening now, it's a much better position.
Please take this as a voiced dislike of Imperialism everywhere -- whether American, British, or European. It happens all the time, and will always happen, and we have to accept it, but we don't have to like it. ;) |

| with a few congressman saying that the U.S troops may stay in Iraq upwards of 5 years, I think we will definatly have a quagmire eventually. The longer the U.S stays in Iraq the more the people are going to rise up. |

True. And if they'd quit rising up now, we'd be out a lot quicker in the long run! Though I know there are plenty who will dispute that. |

yea I for one would dispute that.. Whatever happend to their strategy of what to do in Iraq.. it doesnt seem like there's any kind of leadership. That guy who was suppose to be the Viceroy of Iraq what ever happend to him? The retired general??? I think even if there are no uprisings the U.S still will occupy Iraq for some time to come |

lol tougher?? the previous guy was a retired general!! hah.. or rather was he just not up for the job. To reconstruct a nation, you have to be also part politician.. Having a retired military officer run things is probably a bad idea anyway. |
