I am only 16, but i'm really looking into a ProTools setup. I have been producing on cubase for a year and before that reason and fruity loops. I feel using software has limited me synthesis wise and looking forward to do this in the future. I don't even know music theory yet but I have mastered percussion and mastering. Right know im working on synthesis.
I am looking to purchase this setup!
What I plan to do.
->Take 2 Years of Music Theory ($$ ??)
->Virus C Keyboard (1,500)
->Pro Tools|24 MIXplus (10,000)
->Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2 Ghz (3,000)
hows this sound to you pros out there? |

In my opinion, the protools mac setup is definately not the only way to go, and can cost you alot of extra money that could be spent on other gear. You can buy a good 24.96 sound card for $350.00 and then buy a 32 channel mixer (if you actually want as many channels as the protools mixplus), and it will be alot less than the MIXplus.
It is really up to you if you want to go PC or Mac, but I personally prefer PC. Just make sure your computer has a fast processor. I am running a p4 1.7ghz and its fine for mixing 35 tracks of audio and midi in 44khz audio, if you want to actually work in 96khz, you will need a much faster computer. And stack up on ram. I have 1024mb and I've never run into any problems. ;)
I dont know what gear you currently have, but I'd definately get a good pair of monitors with a sub if you dont have them already.
Instead of getting a virus c keyboard, you could buy a virus c rack, and an external midi controller keyboard, and save yourself some money. this woul also be easier to add aditional synth units. If you save the money from the protools mixplus, you could still afford a few more synths, including a nice Waldorf Q!
It's up to you, but there are many many different routes you can take with production. I actually got into hardware synthesis, and now Im selling my gear to work exclusively with software and samples. |

Do you plan on producing (not just your own stuff, but other's as well) for a living?
There's no question that pro tools is great for what it does, but I'm also convinced that doing what you plan to do will "limit" you more than you already are. I don't see what good a pro tools system will do for you if you feel you've exhausted cubase and reason and fruity loops. There are many people (professionals, signed to labels) releasing quality music, for example, made with fruity, and one of my favorite producers uses buzz. Of course, they're getting their stuff sent off to studios for the final polish, but unless you want to be a recording engineer I would recommend strongly against your idea. |

ProTools is niftier for audio then for midi
which makes it a great tool for recording artists, and IMHO not a necessity for midi artists, like most of us |

That setup is very limited. It's a good start, but one synth is not enough. You also need things like compressors and effects like reverb.
The idea that Cubase is limited compared to Protools is not true in a way. The quality of music mostly depends on the producer, not on the tools used. He'll need some decent tools of course. Protools in the wrong hands can sound less then some decent tools in good hands.
Cubase and Logic and so on are good enough for what you want in my opinion. If you're confident about yourself and you can afford it to expand your setup with some decent tools later, then it seems like a very good start to me.
Also you could buy more equipment if you get something cheaper then the protootls stuff of course. |

Hey
Since your only 16, I wouldnt spend 10 grand on the Pro TOols HD set up..
Instead I would get the Digi 001 or the Digi 002 (control surface, which works beatifully with Pro tools.
All the money you just saved there can go to the Virus C Rack, and a number of other awesume synthizers.
Just be sure, when you get your mac (which i support 100%) is to stock it up with ram, get as much as you can and never worry about it again.
I turn 16 on July 14th, and this summer I am heading to the pro tools as well.
I am going to pick up the Mbox, and also use Reason 2.5 with it as well
What i just said isnt as good as the other posts, but oh well...
