who axed you :)
no point, i just tried to answer to some of the dubious claims made regarding windows and linux... |

funny how you mention 'out of the box'
that owuld concern those security holes that are vulnerable
upon install, and you can judge an OS out of the box based
on what is reported. funny how microsoft had one of the
biggest OS exploits ever in XP, 'out of the box', but decided
not to report it when found, just added the fix in the service
pack and didnt announce it...
now how can i be sure what 'out of the box' means in windows...

nice job Rozzer! I've been wanting to convert my box to linux for a good while now. you guys are funny, talking about how crap your computers are. I have a PII 466Mhz, 64Mb ram, built in sound/video etc. MY PIECE OF CRAP CRAPS ALL OVER YOUR PIECES OF CRAP! |
come ON! im running a CELERON 400MHz, buffed it up with ~300mb of RAM,
integrated sound and video card (vid card is a SiS620 4mb, LOL).
buahaha, I NEED A NEW PC.
i have gotten muLinux, slackware linux, and debian linux running
with no real problems... |

| of course microsoft won't publicize a "big hole" like that, duh! they don't want most people to know about it, so that smart ass teens go on a rampage fuxing up. Still, key clients of Microsoft are informed about these exploits ;) |

hahaha linux propaganda got to you, linux is linux (all flavors) and Unix is Unix (all flavors)... they're similar but aren't used in the same places... I don't think military or banks would even consider linux mandrake or any other flavors for critical systems... SCO Unix and some other customized OS servers will do the job. Also doesn't the US military uses windows 2000 in most of their machines? :)
I personnaly work in a highly secure organization and I once stated linux for a non critical server and everyone looked at me as if I came from another planet :D
also, fyi, out of the box, windows xp is more secure than linux red hat out of the box ;) |
I hate to burst your bubble but having worked for a bank AND the military I can tell you that most of their policies require that publically accessable systems be installed with Common Critera evaluated OS's to at least EAL4. Windows NT couldnt even manage EAL2 when they tried to have it evaluated, 2k server is still going thru the works after failing twice to hit EAL4, and theyre not even bothering with XP.
Sure linux isnt perfect but the kernel source is more stable than anything in windows. Linux does not crash more than windows, in fact linux really doesnt crash at all because it handles its memory managment properly. The longest reported uptime for a linux server is well over 1000 days, i dont think any windows server has beat 400 yet. Face it youre just plain wrong.
As for more secure out of the box, 1) i doubt it, 2) so ing what if it is? Any sysadmin with half a clue isnt going to deploy an out of the box config for a production server.
3rdly, i dont know where you pulled the idea that SCO unix was a good stable server OS from, probably your ass, because i have NEVER met anyone in my entire career who has EVER deployed a SCO box for anything. Solaris, AIX, hell even Free-BSD, bgut never SCO. |

What's "EAL"? What OS does the military use? I always was curious... |

| k.k.d. |
I'll completely move to a Linux as my priamry OS when Adobe will port Photoshop to it (which will never happend).. And no, GIMP doesn't cut it for me...
Then again, unix + photoshop == mac os x.. I wish I had cash :((( |

| " the military " is a rather broad statement. Because i have coders in my company who used to be navy seals and they are the only ones with the clearance to work for some Boeing projects et cetera but they are considered military applications even though its for windows coded with Remedy...so i wouldnt say military, is my point because thats ridiculous |

| Tranzmit |
Photoshop + Illustrator + Indesign 2 + Traktor 2 + LAME Encoding + Games = Windows XP
I'd switch if i could but thats not an option at the moment. |
