Volume Cutting

Hey guys, I spin trance/house/prog and although these genres rarely "require" cutting, I like to do some, specially during my transitions (and I found out on a DJ Joop TE set that he likes them as well ;) ) but I have one question, I sometimes like to do cuts during breakdowns, or to the beats, but most of the times it sounds awful. But I listen to the pros (for instance Johan Gielen during TE2002) and they pull it out rather well. Does the curve counts? I use Mid (I also have Sharp and Smooth). Also do you cut with the crossfader or the volume faders? I have a Behringer VMX-300. Any Suggestions? :)
Cheers! |

Use the volume faders. or u can get creative and with that particular mixer, (I bought it too, but haven't received it in the mail yet)
you can lower each EQ as you like and then use the toggle EQ kills to kill all frequencies, giving no signal.... then once u need the breakdown to come back, just raise em all up again (and obviously release the toggled kills).
but without all that shnazzy stuff...use the volume faders....you don't wanna rely on the crossfader for that kind of signal manipulation... the fader is designed for signal to signal usually. |

one beat volume cut before the breakdown ends is usually good (ie just before the climax)
and with the bass, killing it totally, and bringing it back every one beat for a few bars sounds awesome if on the right tune - need a thin heavy bass and do it just before the breakdown |

might wanna try cutting certain EQ's instead of the whole volume, i find that often sounds pretty nice, bringing the high or mid down in the middle of the breakdown and then bringing it back up right at the peak
arg hard to explain ;p
experiment :p |
