Computer Hardware question + SGI Irix help needed

In my livingroom computer, there is a high frequent noise comming from
the speakers. When I mute the main volume, the sound disapears. This means that it isn't from
my speakers or it's amplifier. It is the computer. My idea, is that it can be the
audio cable between the cdroms and the soundcard. The soundcard is good, a Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo II,
I don't think it's anything wrong with it. However I do have this problem, if you have an idea for
a sollution, don't hesitate to reply :)

Alright, and my other problem. I have no control over my Irix system. Being quite comfortable with
Linux, I find Irix to be quite arcane. Can someone please tell me how I can define a default gateway
for the first ethernet adapter? I need this to make it connect to the Internet.
Also, how can I know if a device is turned on? Eg. the network adapter :) I have no clue of where I can see what devices has got their drivers properly loaded.

Cheers!
