Check out some material from Craig Armstrong...he's modern classical. He does alot of music for movie scores and such, but has a few albums he's done by himself.

Watch the movie Amadeus. youll like it, and its insanely good. will help you understand

Just listen to classical on DI.fm, or just turn on CBC Radio Two or something... That's what I do. I don't have time to look for good composers/compositions myself.

Samuel Barber <-- Adagio for Strings. some of his other stuff is wonderful, but i cant think of titles off the top of my head.

if u get stuff by Tchaikovsky, i recommend his 4th symphony, in particular the finale. massive piece.

Vivaldi <--anything by

Mozart <--i've taken a fancy to his Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, but eh. anything by him too.

Michael Kamen did the musical scores for Band of Brothers. The miniseries won a Golden Globe for Best Musical Score(i think). I really like the Band of Brothers Main Theme and Suite Two. I suggest checking some of his stuff.

I can't believe I did'nt mention this earlier...

If you like piano, have a listen to Bach's The Goldberg Variations performed by Murray Perahia released by Sony. IMHO, it truely is the greatest recording ever - I listen to it almost everyday (puts me to sleep :D ). If you do like it, have a listen to Glenn Gould's rendition - quite a different prespective indeed ;)
Endlesswave
Phillip Glass. (modernist classical composer) insane stuff...it almost sounds electronic but it's ALL done with keyboards, violins etc. It's really quite unique.
