The Mill Create Matrix Stunts for Heineken

May 29 2003 - The Mill New York has worked with director James McTeige of Radical Media LA to put together the latest Heineken spot, Waitress. Based on the blockbuster The Matrix the spot follows an agile waitress carrying a tray of Heineken through a crowded bar. The 45” version was transferred to cinema for release up to and during the “Matrix Reloaded” release worldwide.

The waitress, who resembles Trinity, encounters a large guy blocking her way. To get through the crowd she throws the Heinekens in the air, and runs across the side wall! After completing this acrobatic stunt, she lands and safely catches the two bottles of Heinekens on the tray. Her next stunt is to throw up the two bottles, jump into the lotus position then, as time stands still, the camera speeds around her in this frozen moment in time. As she falls back into real time she kicks a man off his feet and sends him crashing into the wall. Again - she catches both bottles of Heineken beer and delivers them to the two, rather bewildered men who had originally ordered them.

The timeslice footage was shot and supplied by Big Freeze in Texas. Flame operator Ian Plumm stabilized, composited, graded and treated the timeslice footage within the shots and then created a smooth transition on either side of the shot.

Ian then composited the bottles into the scene where they tumble back down into frame just before the time slice sequence begins. Ian also created a dynamic shot where the bottles actually land on the tray.

Gavin and Jamie worked on all rig removal and blue screen shots including the waitress running along the side wall, the overhead shot, the timeslice sequence and the man's crash into the wall. The spot also required extensive paintwork on the man's chest as his string vest did not cover up the padding he was wearing underneath his shirt for the stunt.

Jamie, Jeanette and Gavin also worked on creating the end title sequence that resembled the Matrix 'raining code'.
