Every seen/heard about the new mp3PRO audio Codec?

In short, it allows double the compression that the standard mp3 codec allows.

i.e. a song that is 128kb/s in mp3PRO will have the size of a 64kb/s song in normal mp3.

It does this by using 2 "audio streams" (my choice of words may be a little off) for compressing.

mp3PRO s/w will be able to play mp3 tracks, but mp3 s/w will play the newer tracks at a lower quality as they will only recognise one of the two streams.

yeah ive heard of that program and i downloaded it and used it
and it really works, but it doesnt sound as good as the original. i got one .wav file and converted one normally and the other using mp3PRO. the normal one sounded better, the site said that in the future they will make music players that will be compatible with this new compression thing !!

only problem is that the froenhofer (whatever their name is) is making people pay royalties for every usage of the codec.

good sum up is at http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/

i quote :
Why Vorbis? MP3 is open.

No, it isn't. Fraunhofer (and other MPEG consortium members) claim that it is impossible to create an mp3 encoder without infringing on their patents. To create/use an encoder, the law says one must pay royalties to Fraunhofer and other MPEG Consortium members. In other words, you can play what you like, but you're not allowed to contribute without paying the ante. MPEG-4, destined to be the next generation of internet audio, is even more tightly controlled.
More worrisome is the prospect of behind the scenes alliances between MPEG (which dominates the audio technology) with the RIAA/music industry which seeks to control all distribution.

Do you really want a corporate alliance controlling what music you can listen to and when? Remember that the RIAA is working hard to make players that play anything other than officially sanctioned
streams illegal.

Why Vorbis?

We already have MP3 and don't want to change.
I'll be blunt.
If you didn't pay for that copy of mp3enc, you're [technically] a thief. Strictly speaking, LAME users are supposed to pay royalties to FhG too. Of course, MPEG members tend not to go after individuals; that would be nearly impossible.

Going after businesses is an entirely different thing. If you're running a business, you either pay the arbitrary royalties (FhG decides this on a case-by-case basis, and generally protects 'exclusives' it has arranged with other companies) or you don't stream. There are no low cost, unrestricted, legal streaming solutions for small business. The alternatives to MP3 aren't cheap either.

mmm well maybe ppl will crack it like they did mp3 :)
anyway it means smaller d/ls and better sounds for us all so its all good

hehe

Hmmm, I'm always wary about new compression methods and types. Usually just a phase, and they never take off. What's the quality like though? What's it's maximum bitrate?

I'm always open to new stuff.. I think that if people gave more publicity (and im not saying it doesnt have any) that things would take off, instead of just flopping.. i think that they should get more stuff like this, and try and flush mp3 down the drain.. there has to be better compression methods out there .. sitting on some genious's hard drive in some dark basement, in some 24 house, town..
there has to be..

i dont think this new invention will take off....i think the quality of mp3's now is fine enough and i dont' think people are perfectionist enough to want something onley a little bit better...well i don't, i'm fine with mp3's....

infinity
i want it.. if it saves me half the memory.. ohhhhhh yeaaaaaa
now lets just wait for 192 compress rate.. and winamp support hehe
djthunderbird
personally I dont give a :)
there are formats bettar than Mp3 already (VQF, WMA to name a few) but nobody uses them anyway :)

eh Im too addicted to mp3z that I will never encode / download something else :) :D :)
