How to judge a DJ?

| OK, i admit i haven't seen a DJ live and i can only go by what i hear on the internet (no flames please). How you do judge a DJ? By their mixing skills or tracklist? i really can't distinguish the difference other than the blatant trainwreck or beatmatch mistakes. Maybe other DJ's or 'veteran' listeners can help me out. Yes, i've been on here for a while but what i think may be awesome others think sux, so maybe you can tell me (and other n00bs) what to look for. |

| Beatmatching and mixing skills are very important to a great DJ, but in the grand scheme of thing they are the smallest things. You could mix like a nut, and still never hold a candle to certain DJs just because they can read the crowd and can play the right tracks at the right time, while still having a progression to their set that takes you on a journey. I think this is the best way to explain it. |

For me:
01. Music quality. A good DJ must play interesting and impressive music, otherwise nothing will help him/her to keep ppl in the right condition.
02. Good tunes require good mixing skills - not only betamatching here but also a "set idea"... :) |

| I brought this topic up only because, for me, the obvious choice is track selection. I have been listening to the Sasha-Cattaneo set from Moonwalk Buenos Aires and even skimming thru it, i thought it was an outstanding set. The other side, Armin's set at Sensation White, to me (and i say this as MY OPINION ONLY) didn't impress me that much, though i do like what he does on his ASOT shows (when i can hear them). I'm only trying to understand more of what i should be looking for. |

As I see it, it's a big different in styles aswell. Take for exampel Armin van Buuren vs. Marco V. (My style of music) Armin mixes smooth, can often hardly hear when he is mixing, on the other hand Marco V "hammer" the tunes on each other (strange exprecion ??) Sounds so different, but I think they are both greeeeat as DJ´s, but with differnt styles.
Ofcourse you can hear a bad DJ missing the beat, sounds horrible, or if he just can't read the floor.. |

Well, if the crowd is dancing, then I guess they're a good DJ.
Greatness?
Tracks youve never heard before but sound real cool
If a DJ has their own personal sound

| To me what makes a "good DJ" is someone who can hold my interest through an entire set. Great tune selection and placement are key factors for me. You can have all the ability in the world in terms of mixing and whatnot but if your tunes dont hold my interest then whats the point? To me mixing is the easiest part of being a DJ. The hardest part of deciding what tunes to play and when to play them. A good DJ knows his tunes inside and out. A good DJ stays true to him/herself and mixes to his/her own style and not to whatever the masses may want. A good DJ has passion for the music he/she is playing and a feal for the mood it creates. |
