How to DJ Properly and How to DJ Right are the same books, just UK and US versions from different publishers.
I wasn't sure if everyone knew this yet - same authors, number of pages. |

I've had this book for a while now, and while I have not read quite all of it, it is really by far the best book that I've seen on the market. I've only read a few though ;). The best part of this book is how comprehensive it is. It is very well written, and though I would like it to be slightly more specific, it still covers a LOT of ground for so few pages (283). It starts out where almost every dj starts out--in the bedroom. It teaches you how to become a Dj quickly, and though there has been arguement on this thread that you "need to become your own entity", this book teaches just that. It doesn't tell you which tracks to play in what order, or even what style of music to like the best etc. It teaches you the key components of beatmatching, phrasematching, volume levels, cross fader technics, how to avoid ing up even when it is inevitable and other begining techniques.
From there it goes on to what it is like to play out in a club, at a house party, or at a rave. It give you all of the important points that you must look for that you never had to deal with in your bedroom--like reading a crowd, set buildup and respecting other djs depending on what time you perform.
Then it proceeds onto the more advanced techniques that involve sound improvement, EQ control, scratching and other effects and techniques. The best part of this book is probably the last part. This part explains how to get into the dj community. It explains how the business works and what you have to do to get a shot a joining it. There are so many great hints, tips, tricks and practical advise in this book that I can't believe that it took this long for this book to hit this forum! It has been out for close to a 6-12 months now, I think! |

This book is as helpful to beginners as it is to more experienced dj's. And the interviews with all the famous djs really inspire you to keep on going. I would definitely recommend this book!
