Yevat, I agree totally.
Heard 'Castles In The Sky' on Chris Moyles show for fuxxsake...
Mixmag is crap. I've never bought an issue in the 5 years or more I've been buying both DJ and Muzik. |

That's the real problem with some of you supposedly TAs: Egocentrics.
its like a religion to some, bunch of fundamentalists. Cheese this, cheese that, some of you guys are walking cheese spitting factories!!
I don't mind ATB, Darude, or Venga Boys (a few songs). Do not classify those artists as cheese as you won't be any better than a death metal freak who thinks Trance reeks moldy cheese.
we bunch TA have alot of passion for this music, but sometimes it clouds our objectivity. |

MIXMAG is a prime candidate who lacks any objective skills in appraising trance artistis and Djs. |

Here's an example of some stereotypical cheese:
DJ Jurgen "Better Off Alone"
Liquid Child "Diving Faces"
ATB "9PM Till I Come"
These all have simple, catchy and repetitive synths, cheap melodies, limited sound layers. "Better Off Alone" and "Diving Faces" both have simple, catchy, beepy riffs and are stereotypical cheese. A track will also be labelled cheese if it's unoriginal and annoying. take Public Domain "Operation Blade". They new it would be huge if they put in a sample of the Blade theme ("Confusion"). Not only did they rip that from another tune but they used a Public Enemy sample ("bass to your face London") which they didn't get the rights to so they changed it to something which sounded very similar. Warp Brothers "We Will Survive" is another example, just a rip off of Josh Wink "HSOFC". A tune can also be killed by annoying vocals. Fragma "Everytime You Need Me" (the worst "trance" track in existence in my opinion) which suffers from both cheap production and horrendous vocals! That's my definition of cheese for you! |

Follow these simple and comprehensive guidelines when looking for good music.
A song immediately sucks if...
A.) It's produced then immediately marketed without it blowing up in the underground scene first.
B.) People who don't understand, nor like trance find the song 'catchy'
C.) The song incessantly drumrolls itself into every plateau.
D.) Twangy synth is used by the specific artist in every damn track. (Die ATB, die!)
E.) You see it advertised on T.V.
A song has merit when...
A.) You hear it on a white label.
B.) It evokes something spiritual when you listen to it.
C.) It defines itself from all other tracks with uniqueness and originality.
D.) Nobody else but you likes it!
E.) The producer has no other motivation than to make music from his/her heart and soul for a select group of avid listeners.
Follow these simple guidelines and you shall be free from all cheese and commercialism in the electronic music industry.
Enjoy,

i disagree with some of your points. i can object to more than a few of your points, here's a few:
"People who don't understand, nor like trance find the song 'catchy' "
not true, a few of my roomates who have never loved trance come to love non-cheesy catchy trance songs darude - sandstorm being one (agian i dont consider tha song cheese). and what about robert miles - children? very catchy yet thats one of the songs that brought many people into trance and its definitly not cheese.
"You see it advertised on T.V. " - thats big bull. michillen (or some other tire company) had azzibo da bass (timo maas mix) as their song, agian that is not cheese. |
