Paul Bernardo Question

Friend of mine says Bernardo is suffering in prison...being in solitary confinement for his own protection and he says that bernardo will suffer by spending the rest of his life in prison.
I say hell no....he raped 20..killed 4....he cannot feel remorse....i say he should be introduced to the general prison population and whatever happens, happens. I feel he is getting better treatment than some of us...trying to make ends meet. He gets 3 meals a day and we pay to have in solitary for how many yrs the miserable waste of human life lives.
SO what do you think....btw....this is not capital punishment issue but then again....for most in canada...he would be the first. Anyway...what do you think. |

| Throw the bastard in with the general population. Let those guys take care of him. Hopefully they'll rip him a new before they kill him. |

Your response doesn't address his point, though.
Him: Bernardo is suffering.
You: Bernardo, because he feels no remorse, cannot suffer. But he should.
You obviously equate remorse with suffering. T'is not the case. I think your friend meant he is suffering in jail because of his living conditions. as an individual, he's suffering. That has nothing to do with the crimes he committed though. You can be mother theresa, and suffer. You can be Paul Bernardo and suffer. Doesn't matter that he did some terrible things.
Lastly, you can't equate solitary confinement with struggling to make ends meet. He has had his freedom taken away from him (and rightfully so) - those who are just broke/poor have not. You can't tell me that free meals in jail for the rest of your life is better than struggling to eat as a free man in society! |

if you think THATS bad, you should read about the 5 star resort karla homolka (spelling?) got to stay in.... you call that a prison? she had her own tv and free meals. i cant remember the other details but it pissed me off when i read about it a few years back...
in 1st year university i paid 5 grand for residence and 4 grand for food... while karla gets a free stay in a room that was a lot nicer than my residence. who's the criminal here? me? |

I think you guys are blowing things out of proportion. Don't believe everything you read or hear.
And even if it were all true, these people are in JAIL. Who gives a about a TV or a nice meal when you live BEHIND BARS? |

You think it means anything that they're behind bars? I'll bet half of these people have no places to go anyway. They probably would never leave their houses except to kill and rape. And besides, we're forgetting about the people who didn't have houses to begin with, street kids and older bums who committed crimes solely for the purpose of getting taken off the streets and being put in jail, where they never have to worry about finding food or a place to sleep. I wouldn't want to be behind bars, but you're dreaming if you think that it's a punishment for everyone. And anyway, is punishing them really the only thing that's important?
Here's an idea that was suggested to me which I found interesting. I'm not saying I approve of it, but it is worth thinking about and at least it's a suggestion rather than pointless complaining. This doesn't just apply to Bernardo, but all criminals.
If they're under 18, have them whipped. In public. The worse the crime, the harder and longer they get whipped for, and multiply that by the number of repeat offenses. But after that, let them go. No jail, none of that , because for god's sake, we don't need them getting exposed to all the other hardened criminals out there.
If they're over 18, put them in a cell and force them to study something, a la 1920's public school, with an officer watching over their every move with a whip or a rod to make sure they never slack off. If they start getting too chatty, they get whipped. If they fail a test, they get whipped. Maybe we could modernize this with some kind of shocking device to make it easier for the officers. This doesn't have to apply to solitary confinement - they can have officers assigned to little study groups inside bigger cells. Just force these people to learn something, something useful so that when they get released (if they get released), they'll have some relevant skill that will enable them to get a job and do something with their lives other than maim and rape.
Okay, so I have my reservations about giving them a free education. But , it's better than free TV and lobster dinners, it's better than letting them sodomize each other and learn new ways to commit crimes from their prison buddies. No one said it had to be a first-class education. And let's face it, these people clearly don't want to be educated. This is punishment for them. Picture the class you hated the most in high school and imagine having an officer standing over you, whipping you every time you get an answer wrong. , we might even teach these people to have a little self-discipline.
These people either need professional help or strict discipline. In prison, they get neither. Child molesters plead with the courts to get help, to figure out what's wrong with them and rid them of their fetishes. Instead, they get thrown in jail and get a nice juicy label slapped on their foreheads when they've served their time. How is that supposed to help anything!?
Well, maybe it'll never happen, but I honestly believe that if anything is going to rehabilitate these people, it's an education and a lot of forced discipline. And if they're in for life or they just can't be educated, then they'll suffer by spending the rest of their lives getting constantly whipped.
What do you think? :p |

This is very true for me, but for most of these people, they probably, as Diginut said, don't get out of their houses unless to rape or murder people. |
