-- How do you keep from getting "shelved" by a label? --

Most of us have heard the old story...A friend's band gets signed to a label or agency or something. The company sets up a nice website for the band, lines up a big show or two, records the band's first album...

And then nothing! The album gets almost no promotion, the band's website is reduced to a link to the company's corporate website, no more shows, and worst of all, the fans get the impression that the band no longer exists...

Meanwhile, the band is still alive and kicking, is dying to record and play shows, and the company WON'T RETURN THE BAND'S CALLS. And the band can't sign with someone else because they're locked in a contract with a company that doesn't care and is still holding them hostage.

SIGNED, SHELVED AND IMMOBILIZED. Oh and as for suing the company, you need lawyers and money which our good old friend's band doesn't have.

Any ideas on how to prevent this scenario?

only send demos to independant labels with a good reputation :)

hire a lawyer to review your contract before you sign. =P
