Duncan Sheik beyond "On a High"

I was wondering if anyone was inspired to look into the artist Duncan Sheik after hearing Gabriel and Dresden's remix of his "On a High".

For me, I've been a Duncan Sheik fan since his self titled debut album back in like 1995, and I've purchased every one of his other albums, "Humming", "Phantom Moon", and "Daylight." Similarly, I'm a huge fan of electronic music, and I have been bedroom DJing for about a year and a half. As one can easily see then, it was an amazing thing to see my favorite artist, Duncan Sheik, getting an amazing amount of attention from most of my favorite DJ's. Finally getting the vinyl of "On a High" was really special because it was not just another awesome record to play, it was something that I genuinely felt a passion for because I had been a fan of Duncan Sheik for so long beforehand.

Anyway, I just wanted to know if there were any other fans of Duncan Sheik (beyond liking On a High) on the boards? If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend checking out his non-remixed material, he's just a fantastic musician, extremely classy, very Nick Drake-esque. Plus, on a personal note, I know sometimes listening to the fast-paced, high-energy sounds of dance music can sometimes get overbearing for me, and I really need something to clear my head with so to speak, and Duncan Sheik's music always calms me down and brings me back to earth.

well, I downloaded the original of "On a high" to see what it was like, but it just didn't do it for me, personally. But that's just me :) do respect him though!

there is also the jamie myerson mix of On A High, which is pretty good compared to the Gabrielle/Dresden mix. Also, a johnny vicious and junior vasquez mix of reasons for living which i do enjoy as well.
as for duncan sheik themselves, i enjoy listening to them because of the special lyrics and the voice is rather soothing to relax to.

I just got my Duncan Sheik - On A High vinyl(with G&D mixes on it) and i love it. I haven't checked out much other Duncan Sheik but i think i will.

is it just one dude, named Duncan Sheik? or is it a collarboration of people?

Duncan Sheik is just one man, even though he has a regular back-up band just like most solo artists.

He's definitely still around; he, for better or worse, hardly ever gets to tour as a headliner anymore, though. I think he's the opening act for Aimi Mann right now.

If you're new to Duncan Sheik, I'd check out tracks like "She Runs Away," "Reasons for Living," and "Wishful Thinking" to hear some of his more catchy songs.

He's a real rarity today: an extremely proficient musician, as well as an excellent composer and lyricist.

Anyway, look into Duncan Sheik if you can, spread the buzz!

That is why there is chillout/ambient music ;) There is an electronica genre for everything :D

This is the second thread that I've read you posting this exact same thing. There is no need to spam the forums

Thanks for spamming this thread man, you're sig is really cool.

Anyway, Barely Breathing definitely was a radio favorite, and certainly overplayed. On the plus side, it set some sort of record by remaining on the Billboard Top 100 chart for like 54 weeks or something. Just don't let that one radio hit of Duncan Sheik taint your image of his as some sort of run of the mill, cookie cutter, pop act though.

On the idea of chillout/ ambient, I have quite a few CD's that could be considered that ranging from Wamdue Project, Massive Attack, and, of course, lots of Chicane's works. However, sometimes I just need that more human, more "traditional" chillout music that can only be found when a real human plays a real wooden instument, and sings with his real voice. Duncan Sheik I think fits that bill perfectly!
