Im sorry but i fail to see how ur average whip can achieve speeds of over 700mph. Im gonna need better proof than a site that says experiments have been carried out, but gives no detail into what experiments were actually carried out and what the results were. I'll ask my physics teacher tomorrow, coz if its true then its fascinating but i want more detail. I no when a concorde goes over speed of sound the sonic boom is huge. Does this mean the sonic boom is proportional to the mass? Hmm.. anywayz.

try to think of the speed of the whip at a given point increasing exponentially from the grip >>out during a crack.
when you look at an exponential curve what does it look like. the slope increases (relatively) slowly at first then zoom! almost straight up lookin

same thing with the speed at points on the whip. grip moves slowly tip breaks sound barrier

Edit: forgot to post about the noise level.

im pretty sure it only crcks like that due to the size of the pressure wave as it breaks the sound barrier.

when something is accelerating towards the sound barrier(in air) it builds up a pressure wave infront of it(of air) when it reaches the speed of sound it breaks thorugh the pressure barrier. the air flows around the object and comes back together in the back creating the "boom" or "crack" in this case.

so think about the size of the concorde:Huge and the size of the tip of a whip:Kinda Tiny. now think about the airmass being built up before each respective objects breaks through the pressure wave. the larger the airmass the larger the sonic boom

hope i could help feel free to correct me if im wrong anywhere
