| been thinking about getting a laptop for college... you know, hardcore word processing and all... and occasionally downloading / surfing / watching movies / playing games... planning on spending $1,000-1,200...maybe more. i'm feeling like 2GHZ+, 512MB DDR, some good video card, good sound card, 15", 802.11 lan, dvd/cd-rw drive... any advice, like where to look, what's reliable, what's generally good for laptops or how much i should spend? |

| I hate to say it but if you want to get a decent brand (ie dell, toshiba, etc.) and not a crappy clone you won't get a computer that good for that price. Your best bet is to get a dell, they are reliable and the most reasonably priced. The cheapest way to get one is to look in a newspaper where they will have adds with deals. Its considerably cheaper to do that then to just buy it without getting a package. I would also recommend you make sure the chip is a pentium M. Their faster then regular ones, regardless of the number, and will extend your battery life for an hour or two. |

Buying a laptop for in range of $1200-1400 is insane. Toshiba, Sony, compaq, HP…whatever you name are being made in third world countries. Don’t buy new. Buy refurbished laptop by manufacture. You can get a great deal at www.surplusvillage.com. Let me know if I can help. E-mail or PM me at [email protected].
Good luck!!!

2nd dell Inspiron 4100 works well, sold it to get a better one
