About the Artist
Julia McKay is a composer, speaker and performance artist who is committed to enhancing lives and promoting passionate living. Her debut recording, Where the Light Shows Through, is a perfect illustration of her belief in the power of music to inspire and ignite what is most meaningful in our lives. Julia exclaims that music is the quickest way that she knows to open the heart and create connection - it is a language beyond words - a language of the Soul and Spirit.
A native of Colorado, Ms. McKay is the founder of and principal recording artist with Spiritfingers Music. She currently performs, speaks and leads workshops on exploring the intimate relationship between spiritual freedom and creativity. Julia believes that dedication to the things that empassion us become powerful openings for all that is truly desired in life.
With degrees in both music and counseling, Julia has always been interested in the power of music to access what is purposeful and soul-filled in each of our lives. As a former educator, "Ms. Mac" (as she was fondly known by her students) made it her primary focus to provide students with the opportunity to learn about themselves and discover their unique expressions in the world. Music is a vehicle that accesses all the wonder we each have inside of us. Often students who were having trouble in other subjects or just life in general, would excel in my classroom and find an avenue to higher self-esteem," she remarks as she recalls the special times she had with thousands of students over the course of ten years.
When Julia realized that she had been providing many opportunities for her students' self-expression through music but wasn't giving that opportunity to herself, Julia embarked on the journey of composing and producing her own music. In her performances, Julia shares a little about her personal walk along the path toward her dream . . . "I remembered that as a child, little Julie sat at the piano and played long strings of arpeggios over and over and over - because she liked how it felt. It was naturally what I loved to do. Playing these pieces now, offers me the same comfort and peace inside as it did then. It is the closest thing to a spiritual practice that I have," she says. McKay advocates the idea that discovering our place in the world is about connecting with what innately nourishes us.
Although music has always been a significant part of Julia's life - as a composer and pianist, she is a "late bloomer". She played piano on and off growing up and for the last twenty years has been a member of many and varied vocal performing groups including an international touring organization. Now mid-life, she has begun to write music and perform publicly as an independent solo artist. McKay attributes some of her success to mentors like Steve Barta, a local legendary jazz pianist and recording artist. "Steve pushed me to grow musically, and at the same time provided me with a safe space to explore my dream of writing and the possibility of producing my own music." Over the course of the last five years, Julia has slowly gained independence from full-time employment to pursue this passion. Now as founder of her own recording label, Spiritfingers Music, she encourages others to embrace the idea that it is never too late to follow the longings of their hearts. She will also tell you that it has not been easy - but even at tremendous personal and financial cost to her, that the journey has been well worth the sacrifices.
Julia performs in a variety of venues from intimate settings to large concerts and festivals and often presents workshops in conjunction with her concerts. In addition, over the past three years, her music has enhanced the comfort of people struggling with catastrophic illness when she has participated as a volunteer in the Complimentary Therapies program at Pikes Peak Hospice.
Her performance is a heartfelt and enriching journey for ALL who listen. Where the Light Shows Through is programmed to satisfaction as each piece gradually leads us up and out emotionally - toward an expression of joy. Julia tells us that her "music is composed and performed as a celebration of ALL OF LIFE: the delicious and profound as well as the desperate and profane. Each composition is written to enhance conscious connection with one's emotions and thoughts - no matter what they are. This connection with oneself can cultivate a reverence for life. It is my hope that this recording brings a sense of peace and passion to all who share this music with me."
