Aha, but i did reply Thor! It was a bit late though, some near middle/end of last page anyway here it is again:
I'm gonna be treking around iceland, going on an expedition thing, should be great fun, one of our goals is to cross the Vatnajokull ice cap, but that may be impossible cause of volcanic activities beneath the surface but we'll still do a load of 3 day treks, go skidooing, maybe white water rafting. Getting transport from guy called Svennie (or Svenny?) Ought to be great fun, but drink is really expensive isn't it? 5 pounds or more a pint! aagggahhh. We're spending about half the nights in tents (11 days on icecap, 4 days in preperation... that's already half.) Making our way around some parts of iceland, and we'll do "The Golden Circle" (i'm not 100% certain what that is) before we leave. |

Cool, you'll have a blast! Vatnajökull is a pretty intense experience, especially if you go on those super jeeps :D In fact if your going up there with Svennir I may know him, well at least my brother in law, he's a member of the Icelandic Jeep club, those guys are crazy.. Imagine driving on top of a glacier with the tires badly deflated going about 100km's an hour!
The cool thing is the people that take you up there are very experienced and take lots of precautions. Being that this glacier creates its own weather because of its size (largest in Europe), it can get pretty crazy up there.
The golden circle is the trip around Iceland, its usually takes like 7 days to complete when you stop every day, so I imagine if you take it you'll just do it partially.
And yes, drinks are damn expensive, MAKE SURE you buy absolutely as much alcohol as is permitted at the duty free in the airport. If you don't do this every Icelander you talk to will give you :D
I'd also recommend maybe putting a bottle or two in you suitcase, Iceland customs is not very tough, so its worth the chance IMO.

I saw a program about the flat tyred Jeeping, unfortunatley that's not how we're doing it :rolleyes: we're going by foot/ski, east to west crossing :D long way...
Yea, the people taking us are real experienced, been there loads of times before but they're english and we all know each other -i've known some people who are going for 9 years!
I've heard that svennir/svennie knows lots of people there, and if he doesn't know some one, chances are that some one he know does know them... but he's providing tansport in the form of a coach, not a jeep :( I really want to go and do jeeping some other time (money depending) I'll ask if he is member of the jeeping club.
All i know is a few places we're visiting, listed in order of visiting/passing/crossing: Reykjavik, Landmannalauger, Thorsmork, Skogar, Jukullheimar, Vatnajokull ice-cap, Joklasel, Egilsstadir, Myvatn, Husavik, Akureyri, Kjolur, Reykjavik. I have no idea where half these places are.
Sure, i'll put some scanned pics up when i'm back (i'm gonna take a lot of pics :D) I'm gonna miss my trance though... i'm not gonna have it for 10 or 11 days while we cross the cap! Agghh!
Well, i leave tommorow, so i better get this messy bundle of a grands worth of equipment packed and ready. |
