the critical updates should never be ignored, theres been 3 threads here + 50 others on various tech related forums of people having the same problem, in which a quick trip to windows update would solve! so generally its better to have the updates then without them... imm on a 56k modem to |

Could this be related to that thing that's suppose to happen August 18th? If not, I'll still post the e-mail I received:
"Microsoft has recently released new information on a Security flaw within Windows 2000, Windows NT and Windows XP operating systems. This flaw can allow an attacker to gain full access to an affected PC. There has also been much talk about an internet "worm" virus that, allegedly, will be released on August 18th and is specifically designed to exploit this flaw on a very large scale. PCs within the firm (my dad's law firm) will be protected, the point of this email is to advise you on actions you can take for your home PC.
If you use Windows 2000, Windows NT or Windows XP at home, or if you're not sure what operating system you use, go to the web page www.windowsupdate.com. There will be a link on this page called 'Scan for updates', click on it. You may be asked to allow an ActiveX control to be installed, click Yes. Your PC will be scanned for installed updates and a summary will appear showing both critical and noncritical updates. Installing all critical updates will protect your PC from this security issue (and others). Some of the updates may need to be installed individually followed by a reboot of the PC. Revisit www.windowsupdate.com after each reboot until no critical updates are shown." |
