well if you can live without all the games on windows, linux is a good alternative to windows, although updates are also realsed regulary.
there will always be new updates, hackers spend ages trying to find a way to affect other peoples computers, in most cases the hackers are "nice hackers" who will contact ms with the info and ms will release a patch.
there will never be such a thing as a "secure" operating system, as people will always look for new ways to hack etc so the updates will always have to be downloaded. the updates listed as critical are critical for a reason, I would recomend people visit windowsupdate once a week just to make sure all is well, and install some firewall, www.zonealarm.com is good for beginers, black ice defender is a more advanced one for the pro's |

Linux is a great choice, although you have to patch that one too but you don't need to restart your computer everytime and you can chose to not save the updates (and save a lot of disk space if that's what you want....), it's also very stable and pretty easy to use (basic functions is as easy as in windows but more advanced feturers are more tricky...). Win2000 is also a nice system, not as nice as Linux though =) |

| My XP is messed. There are times that it crashes all the time, turns off itself, or the blue screen appears telling me that Ive downloaded something that its affecting my PC. While I heavent downloaded no software that could affect it.. makes me sick. |

win2k does a decent enough job with out all the fancy gimmicks of XP.
don't download the updates if you don't want to.
and besides if you do get a virus its good to format your computer and clean it up every once in awhile. after that format and reinstall, everything runs so nice and fresh.
just be sure to back up the mp3s and whatever important files you have or get a seperate hard drive that doesn't have any of the OS or programs installed on it and put them on there. |

tell that to the people who did not want to install the update to the RPC hole and had the reboots in the past few days....

ALWAYS backup, storing data on a seperate drive is usefull to, means programs etc will load slightly faster, though some viruses have been known to wipe all harddrives, not just the c drive... |

I'm no fan of Microsoft's products (run a Redhat server alongside this thing), but anyone who tinkers with their computer a lot has to admit that XP's System Restore is a very useful feature... don't know where I'd be today without that thing! It also seems to have a knack for repairing itself... there've been times when I've crashed from running too many apps, seriously damaged a disk, and after 5 or 6 reboots and freakouts, everything is back to normal!
XP's a lot faster than 2K too... that is if you've got a decent amount of memory and a good CPU.
If you're having serious problems, just run scandisk, defrag, regclean, and Spinrite is also a pretty good investment (repairs physical hardware problems with disks). |

black ice defender is . i've been using zonealarm for 3 years and abso-ing-lutely love it.
speaking of linux, a few weeks ago i was talking to my friend and he claimed to be able to root any linux machine using some security flaw. i'm running win2k now, and it rocks, but tomorrow i'll be installing a new hd in a new pc and i'll probably dual-boot it with mandrake / win2k to use as a router / server
btw, everyone should go to www.grc.com and click on "shields Up" to check their ports |
