Review: Joy Kitikonti & Mario Piu - Live @ Space (Miami, FL) 06-22-01
Well what can I say, I have now seen the best performance by a DJ in my entire life thus far. I am talking about Joy Kitikonti, the man is a master behind the turntables. He has to be the most underrated DJ on the planet right now. For those of you that aren't familiar with him he is an Italian DJ and he works closely with Picotto and Piu and the rest of the BXR crew. He has produced several titles but the one I am sure most of you are familiar with is "Joy Energizer". Okay so on with the review...
First of all he was the opening DJ, started @ about 12:30 am. I cannot even begin to describe the tracks he played nor can I identify any track he spun aside from what I am guessing is a personal remix of Azzido Da Bass's Doom's night (Timo Mass mix) and his own track "Joy Energizer" ohh... and what I am also guessing is an unreleased Mauro Picotto Remix of Joy Energizer. He spun for 3 hours and his mixing was FLAWLESS I mean I have heard all the grates' spin, but no one has mixed so incredibly perfect as this guy I literally could not tell when one track was starting and another one begninning. There were times when I could hear him playing with the frquencies tuning out the high's while carrying the beat into what I think was a new track but short of that I couldn't determine when he brought in the new track it was impeckable. The Programming was un-parrallel to anything I have heard in my life. He was the opneing DJ so he didn't just jump into the hard beatz your used to hearing from the likes of Picotto or Piu. He started it off on a Housy/Techno vibe with a few of his own productions im sure. By the time he was 1 and a half hours into his set he was starting to get really hard and everyone in the place was jumping. Me and my friends were standing by the booth just looking at each other in amazment as he put down track after track of unheard stuff. I only WISH I had prepared for this and brought something to record this marvelous set. Take it from me, if anyone knows anyone in charge of booking, try and talk people into booking this guy or try and get a hold of some other live sets he has done as I am sure they are just as amazing. You may think that I am exagerating a bit, that maybe "this guy was on drugs", but no way I was sober as can be not a drink not a thing just my ears closely tuned to a magikal performance. The best part of all is that this guy interacted with the crowd the entire time he would get the crowd jumping and smiling and dancing himself in the booth it was just a pleasure to see & hear.
Following Kitikonti was Mario PIU, he had a hard job in front of him, to perform after such an incredible set was no doubt a difficult task. Me and my friends were guessing that he would probably come in with some CRAZY hard stuff right from the start since Kitikonti got us all hyped already, and we were right!. Kitikonti put a new roof in that place and Piu was now raising it just a bit more. His mixing was AWEFUL but he made up for it with some incredible tunes, they were not for the weak at heart though, anyone who doesn't like it REALLY ING HARD might not have been into it. The only tracks I could I dentify were Morpheous and a hard remix of Technoharmony. Anyhow, with the sound system kicking and the bass running through my body I just couldn't help it, I was jumping all over the place. Kitikonti & PIU had brought a CD turntable which I could see from the dance floor, they brought a few tracks on CD that they probably did at home and have them just for performance purposes and I will tell you these Italians came up with some crazy ! IT was just incredible all the way through. When I left @ around 6am my back and knee caps were hurting from dancing and jumping so hard! =) What a night! |

That's sounds incredible! I only wish we would get great DJs like that in Philly. My friend runs a club in Philly and he says that it's hard to fill a club with people unlees the DJ is kinda commercial. I'll defenitely tell him about Joy Kitikonti! It's nice to be able to go a hear a DJ, with the knowlegde of music, and hear that DJ mix flawlessly, knowning.
We have Dave Ralph and Scott Henry as a resident now, but both are leaning towards a different direction of music then I listen to.
Soon, soon. Philly will get there someday.
