They're different types of synthesizer models. The Roland TB-303 is a classic analog synth that went out of production in 1984 after only 20,000 had been made. It is responsible for spawning entire genres of music - namely, acid. You know that synth line you hear tweaking up and up and up until your ears bleed? That's usually a 303.

The TR-808 was a drum machine roland produced, also in the 80's. Super-heavy, long bass drums, used perhaps most of all in gangsta rap and freestyle . Not a favourite of mine, but tons of people swear by it.

Roland had tons of gear with numbers like that as their model numbers. There was the TR-909 (which is probably the most used drum machine in dance music - especially trance), the TR-606 (a drum machine meant to be a companion to the 303 bassline synth), the TR-727, and the list goes on...

Check out http://www.vintagesynth.org for details and soundbytes. If you want to start producing, you need to know about this !
