| yes, im one of the rare breed that still uses 56k to connect to the internet. i have a 56k, yet i never connect at 56k. its more like 33k or less. most ive connected at recently is 24k. is there any reason why this is happening? i have all the settings of the modem so that it should run faster, but i still have this problem. it is also a brand new modem. any help would be appreciated. |

There are a nunmber of factors involved with 56k modems
- Is the modem as close to the phone socket as possible, is it the main socket or an extension socket - idealy you will get best performance from the main socket (normally the one nearest to the street on the ground floor, the wire from bt goes to this first, all extensions are run from this
- are you using a extension cable from the phone socket to the modem
- are there any other phones attached on other sockets around the house, try removing all but one if so to see if this helps
- you could try ringing your phone company and say sometimes the quality on voice calls is crap say you hear interference, and sometimes the people your ringing are hard to hear sometimes (DONT mention its cos your geting low internet speeds they generally wont help) sometimes they can increase the gain on your phone line
- is it a usb/ internel or modem that plugs to a serial port? |

| hmm.. i bet that your line's just 'piggy-backed' with nextdoor (you both share the same phoneline). Ask your phonecompany / bt to get a dedicated line to your house, they are oblidged? to do it free of charge |

Technically it will never connect higher than 53k on a 56k modem. Good luck :) |

Its probably a crap WinModem and doesnt have Hardware flow control-
The WinModems do it with software and it cant connect at the higher speeds- That along with line quality.
Get a modem with a built in 16550 UART Chip. not a $15 Winmodem. :( |

.. doubt it's the modem, you dont notice a difference in terms of conneciton speed when comparing HAM's to softmodems, HAM's only really make a differnce to your ping. It's prolly more to do with the actual phoneline, like I said, bet it's cuz it's a shared line (we get that here in england), you could try and alter ur mtu settings / packets etc, although would prolly not make that much difference seeing as you actually connect at less than 30. look for a proggie called 'tweakmtu'.
*be sure to backup ur registry before using this program though*
go round next door and see if they connect at the same speed, if they do then it's down to the acutal phonelines. Good luck |
