A step in the right direction, I hope others will follow.

Universal announced that they will drop their prices for CD´s dramaticly to invoke a new market strategy to prevent illegal music downloads and get customers back into the stores, as is reported by german Golem magazine.

"Universal is selling 30 % of the whole CD market in the USA and this is a great position to start this new strategy. We hope, when we drop the prices, that customers will get back into stores and buy more CD´s", told Universal.

CD´s will cost 12,98 USD for musicians like Blink 182, Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, Sheryl Crow, Eminem, 50 Cent and other older artists like ABBA or James Brown, prices will be round about 35 % less than the actual current album prices.
The new strategy will be go live in Q4 2003. If the price cut´s will also touch the european market, is not known yet.

well if one record company does it, it could easily force the other companies into doing it as well, so this could well start a cd price war!

But they all suck ass

Seriously HMV in Ontario jacked up the price of electronic music cd's to like 29 bucks for a single cd which is pathetic. I go hunting in used cd shops, I found FC Kahuna's album for 9 buck, saved me almost 30 bucks (if you add taxes in canada).

True they suck ass, but hopefully others will follow along so that maybe within a few years all CDs are that cheap.

I think the price of main stream music cd's will always set some type of standard....but when you go to buy the electonic music cd's (especially in Canada and the USA) they will always be more expensive.

I hope that BMG and

I hope that BMG and Sony get at it. Theres some potential electronic music artists there.. besides the imports.. I hope that all other companies follow.

Sounds good... now we need some more labels to follow, I'm into different types of music, not just electronic, but none of it's on Universal :p

They should have done this a long time ago. Its now impossible to stop the bandwagon that is file sharing due to it being the size of a small planet :p
