I was in a similar situation to you about 6 months ago. I've wanted to try my hand at producing for a long time and I really thought hardware was the way to go. In the process of researching what I was going to need (in the way of hardware) I stumbled across a log of software options. After a lot of listening and reading I was totally sold on the hardware route. The reason was that hardware is DANG expensive (even used stuff). It's not just that you need to get the synths but you also need the mixing equipment etc. I ended up buying a really nice setup for the price of one Virus. Here's what I have and I'm really pleased:

Cubase SX
Kontact
z3ta+
Midiman Radium Keyboard
Tons of free VSTi's!!!!

if u havnt already tried software, i suggest u go with that before u start shelling out for hardware. u might find production is not for u...
hey cheggy
Decent synths start from around a thousaand pounds.
A good drum machine will be about 6-800 pounds.
A good mixer will be (depending on how many channels you want) about a thousand pounds +. I you only need a small one, you can get a behringer mixer for like 400 pounds which should do the job.
A good sampler (like an s5000) will be about a grand from memory. (attempting to do currenct conversions in head it not easy).

Cubase SX is about 600 pounds I think.
FX units are normally about 100 pounds each for cheaper ones, maybe a bit more.
Big mother sound card to take it all is about 500 pounds although if you hardware mix, you can get something a lot cheaper. Monitor speakers are about 4-500 for a decent pair.

My prices might be a bit off, as they vary and its hard changing everything to pounds, but I think you get the idea. Buying a hardware setup studio costs thousands, which is a price you shouldn't be ready to pay to start. Get going with software, there's some decent stuff out there. Then if you still feel this is something you want to do, you will have a bit more knowledge about which exact pieces of equipment you want/need.

If you don't like beign locked into one program like reason, try Cubase SX or Logic. It gives you the chance to ad on to your virtual studio with more soft synths. Most people here will disagree with me but from experience, they don't tend to sound as good as the real thing but there are plenty of people releasig great songs made from software and its a cheaper, more viable place to start.

come on...not to be rude but do a search on this tpoic....it's like at least one new thread about this topic every week now...

i appreciate what your saying, cos i use other boards where a certain topic will come up time and time again, but to be fair i hardly ever read tranceaddict and also i wanted specific information about what i posted ie. hardware instead of software and what the price range would be. a search might not have given me this information or would made me read loads of irrelevent info.. surely posting should be encouraged or boards like this become stale and boring, nobody is forcing you to open the post and read it so dont waste your time.its not really that big a deal!

anyway thanks to everyone else for all the information, ill do some more looking into it down the music store.

well I see it like this...if we take the pricerange for example...you could have done a search on wich synthns to use...there are plenty of posts about the newest and most usefull synths out there today...

then you could have checked the price yourself on ebay or whatever place you wanna buy the synth...so technically it was a pretty meanless post since you already have all the info you need from the boards...

and don't ya think the forums get more stale and boring if 10 new topics about how to start producing dance music pops up every week?
