It's recruitment...not a draft...lest you are looking beyond the article. :) It's unfortunate that this article appears to show specific targeting, but there are still recruiters everywhere and go to most every school or have an office(s) in a populated county as well as the trips these recruiters take according to the article.

Granted these may be more hostile times...the military is a fine career path for ANYONE to partake in. I come from a long line of family that was in the military, serving in wars and conflicts. It is a choice that I almost made, until the Air Force upped their commitment and pulled their guarantees on flight slots. Went civilian and only looked back once to see if the Coast Guard would offer Officer Flight slots and was foiled again. Oh well, their loss of a good stick.

As far as an "actual" draft...I doubt if it would come to it for the current situation, but 6 more months, and i'm off the hook...I'll be too old. :thepirate :thepirate :thepirate

Interesting article...

Draft ... pFt ...
What ever
Even if there was a draft, what would you do? hide from it?
There is a cost for freedom. It isn't free. People have to
pay for it with their blood, sweat, and tears. What have most
of people done to "earn" their freedom? Nothing... And how many
people have actually been deployed, and fighting in the name of
that very freedom that everyone takes for granted? Not many, I can
garantee that. The military has this under control. So, until you
hear of entire camps of troops being killed in a single blast, I would worry nothing about it. The article is stating that The Gov't
is going to try to target Latinos, and Mexicans into the military.
Which really is nothing. It is the same way that recruiters get poor
people in the military. Think about it. For Example:

You are poor.
Someone offers you a garunteed job for the next 4 years
garunteed food, and shelter for four years
outstanding educational offers.

If you were this poor person, would you not at least think about it?
Sounds like a good deal to me.

pfunk, whats wrong from hiding from the draft? especially if your country isnt being invaded, threaten, or disagree with the war, kinda like clinton did with vietnam. iraq hasnt threaten us, cost any of my freedom, but bush's administration sure has, P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act! I don't know the exsact number of deployed troops (160,000?), but i do know if we would go to war against NK, we wouldnt have enough troops. Also if we did have enough, why are we asking the irrelavant UN for help? so you want whole camps getting killed, before you start worrying? well there has been 145 deaths in iraq, thats 60% of the killed in beirut, and 1178 wounded in action, meaning not friednly fire, thats 806% in what also happened in beirut lebanon.

I know what the article is stating, i said in the topic anyone else feel like a draft is coming?, didnt said there was one going on. the reason i feel like this is, because we are going across the border to recuirt, i guess they are not enough people in this country rushing into recuritment offices to join this war and show their bandwagon patriotism

As for the poor, Ill agree with you on that. sadly you would probaly make more money in mcdonalds than during the first few years in the military, especially now that bush has cut both the vetrens benefits and current military personal paychecks. I have a few friends who are in the military and who have discussed amoung myself and other friends not to go, not even for the pay. I have friends who are enlisted to go, one is leaving in january to be a field medic. I myself am poor, but im not going to enlist in the military to pay for my college. Although it would be nice to travel, but I could do that once I have my career up :)

i doubt that there will be a draft soon, but they are trying to recruit more of the younger people. for the past few days, the military has had recruitment stands at my school looking for juniors and seniors. those ass holes

In order to be able to keep even the current amount of troop strength the US military must do everything it can to get people to sign up. A standard tour now is 3 years..at which time only a very small number sign up for an additional amount of service. If you want a functioning military then you just have to deal with them recruiting. Otherwise there is no other way to keep a military composed entirely of volunteers at full strength.

I am very much against the invasion of Iraq, but now that we are there, I cannot argue with the fact of being there until there is some semblance of stability installed. But even before Iraq, the US military was becoming thinned out by more and more well trained young enlisted men and women leaving at the end of their tours to a higher paying job in the private sector. Having 100,000+ troops deployed overseas just exacerbates the issue.

So I ask you this: Do you want the military to be able to do it's job?

If you answered yes then stop calling recruiters s for looking for people interested in joining up. There is no conscription in this country so it is still your choice on wheter or not you want to join up.

Recruiters have a tough job. Cut them a little slack, they are just doing their job.

There is no draft, we don't even have close to 100% of the army in Iraq...

besides, some of these Mexicans who hop the border only come to make a living and easily avoid taxes, so shouldn't they give something back to the U.S.?

i see how you do want things to work out well in iraq and i can agree with your desire to see everything work out alright, but i strongly disagree with invading countries for whatever reason it may be. so to answer your question in all honesty, no.

You totally missed the point of my thread.

The military has to recruit no matter what is going on currently.

I agree 100% with you when it comes to needless military actions such as Iraq. But calling a recruiter an because someone at the top of the military food-chain makes a decision you don't like is laying the blame in the wrong place.

If the recruiters failed to do their job at a time when there is no need for selective service to kick in it greatly increases the chances that selective service will kick in.

And since you are obviously at or below the minimum selective service age, you should worry about that possiblity a lot more than I do since I am 4 months from being past the age of eligibility to be drafted.
