Remix Comp Results In!! (pg. 4)
View this Thread in Original format
kewlness
i had so much fun just being in it and i was suprised i got 6th and i'm sure happy that i got it :)

great job rb2k1 for hosting the mixes and arctic for organizing it and the judges for judging it

also i wanna thank all the competitors who actually submitted a track.. great work!! although some of u probably weren't too pleased with your results, i personally think each one of you did well... from n2t's mix to christofa

also i think rb2k1's mix was scored a bit too low... his mix was pretty solid and deserved a 70 IMO

I really liked pjort G's remix except that clap which i really didn't like and found annoying... i thought the synth work was excellent but the percussion was a bit lacking

N2t's track has such a wonderful melody... almost made me cry

I liked Fatboy's track too and it was very solid in its production and top notch quality... and I think if the melody was improved on a bit more, it would have won

Chrisle's mix is really original and i think the retro style groove to it was pretty cool

i still haven't gone thru every track but they sure sound good

i can't wait to start the next comp... :thepirate
DJPrototypeX
surprize surprize...i didnt expect much...i would like to some comments though...i know my rmx sux ass, but y would be nice...
chrisle
I only downloaded two mixes, first place and the tie with me and Phorte.

Hey, Phorte -- we tied! You've got a nice mix! Love breaks in the breakdown.

First place winner -- sounds really good. I could definately hear that at a club. Nice one!

What's the next compo?

chris
arctic
Well, i can assure everyone that fatboy was VERY unlucky not to win again. he was winning, then nik voluntered to judge, and put him down :p

Evil man he is ;)

Btw, Mr Mystery left some comments for the contestents, so here they are if anyone is intrested :)

(Sorry, it's going to be a rather long post :/)

-------------------

Plummet - Damaged (Alpha Blue Remix)

- Originality/creativity 10
The opening has a nice vibe but then it kind of loses the plot and nothing really happens.

- Sounds & fx 15:
Percussion 5
Now this is the part that's severely lacking. It is a pretty chilled track but adding some subtle percs would really had helped.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
Nice effects on the vocal and the synths are nice but somehow playing a secondary part in the tune.

- Arrangement 30:
Basic layout/structure 10
Hmm... it sort of goes on and on without changing much. After 2 minutes you've heard everything this track has to offer and it gets a bit tedious then.
The full vocals in the end were a bit needless.

Overall sound/final eq 20
No huge wall of sound here nor was it necessary either.

- Total 55
I don't know what to think of this mix, really. It seems like the artist has had a good idea but it hasn't been used to its full potential.
Then again it's nice to hear a mix that isn't your typical hands in the air anthem fluff.

Plummet - Damaged (Chillful Mix)

- Originality/creativity 15
Interesting housey twist in this one, but not delivered quite all the way through.

- Sounds & fx 17:
Percussion 7
The percussions are fine otherwise but the choice of samples could had been better. Some of them sound strangely lofi/retro.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
This is a pretty minimal mix but that's the way it was intended and it works quite well. The waves were a nice addition.
I'm thinking a subtle piano line would suit this mix.

- Arrangement 35:
Basic layout/structure 20
It works although there isn't much to write home about.

Overall sound/final eq 15
Where is the bass?

- Total 67
Very enjoyable work especially this early in the morning. However, again, it could had been developed further.

Plummet - Damaged (Chisle Retro Mix)

- Originality/creativity 20
This is the style I am into right now and it hits me straight to the nerve.

- Sounds & fx 20:
Percussion 8
The basis of the breaks works well but it would really had needed some additional percussion.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 12
It's all retro, just like the name says. The stutter effect on the vocals could had been used a bit less, though.

- Arrangement 35:
Basic layout/structure 20
Pretty standard fare, but it works.

Overall sound/final eq 15
It could really use widening from both high and low ends.

- Total 75

Plummet - Damaged (Christofa Remix)

- Originality/creativity 7
This could almost be called a collection of clichés...

- Sounds & fx 12:
Percussion 5
It's all just so standard FruityLoops. Heard those perc samples a hundred times.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 7
Look above.

- Arrangement 22:
Basic layout/structure 12
Well it has an intro... an outro... and a middle part.

Overall sound/final eq 10
"What EQ?"

- Total 41
It's obvious that the maker of this hasn't been into producing for a very long time so I won't go into further detail.
The vocal is horribly out of key, though.

Plummet - Damaged (Costa Del Sol Remix)

- Originality/creativity 13
This is probably something in the lines I'd done myself.

- Sounds & fx 20:
Percussion 10
They're pretty basic but they work. The breaks are a nice touch.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
Again, pretty standard stuff but why change a winning formula? I've heard those FX sounds a bit too many times, though.

- Arrangement 32:
Basic layout/structure 17
It was OK up until the 7 minute point after that it was just too long.

Overall sound/final eq 15
The kick is distorting at some points and there's a tad too much reverb on the hihat. The vocals tend to get drowned in the mix and when they're audible they just don't fit.

- Total 65
A solid tune all around. It's a shame that the vocals just don't fit at all.

Plummet - Damaged (Dj Marko Meigas Remix)

- Originality/creativity 11
Even though it works there's just no way there's anything original about this.

- Sounds & fx 22:
Percussion 10
Pretty standard stuff. A bit too much reverb in some areas. Should really need some more to give it more drive.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 12
I can't really say they blew my mind but they are done well and they work.

- Arrangement 27:
Basic layout/structure 17
Standard trance structure. It works.

Overall sound/final eq 10
Now this is the part in need of the biggest improvement. There's practically no high end at all, just mids and lows, which makes the mix very muddy.

- Total 60
Pretty good mix but very VERY bad mastering. Sounds almost like it was encoded in 64kbps instead of 192.

Plummet - Damaged (ELE Remix)

- Originality/creativity 15
It has quite a refreshing vibe but it could had been even better with just a little more effort.

- Sounds & fx 25:
Percussion 12
Not much to talk about here... but they DO work.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 13
Crystal clear synths. Very enjoyable. There's not really FX samples/swooshes etc. used here which is a shame.

- Arrangement 40:
Basic layout/structure 20
Very working formula. Kept short and sweet yet it doesn't sound too short.

Overall sound/final eq 20
The bass is a bit too heavy compared to the rest of the tune and the reverb/delay in it doesn't quite work. Otherwise it's solid.
The vocals should be louder since when the new synth comes in at about 3 minutes it drowns them out.

- Total 80
Very airy and positive mix. I probably wouldn't get into it in a club but it works very well for a home listener.

Plummet - Damaged (Escape N2 Trance Remix)

- Originality/creativity 15
Had I done a remix of this this is probably what it would had been like. A scary thought if you contemplate it ;)

- Sounds & fx 28:
Percussion 13
Hmm, sounds like someone has the same ReFills I do. Very nice work getting away from the standard trance percs.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 15
The pad is absolutely fabulous. The short piano stabs give a nice touch in the break and the main synth is absolutely epic.

- Arrangement 42:
Basic layout/structure 20
Quite standard work but me, it works. The length is just right.

Overall sound/final eq 22
Crystal clear all around.

- Total 85
Throw your hands in the air and jump around! Much much better than the original.

Plummet - Damaged (Fatboy Remix)

- Originality/creativity 15
Fatboy's quite unique style clearly recognizable.

- Sounds & fx 30:
Percussion 10
Nothing fancy but they work. The subtle breaks are a nice touch.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
The synths are nice (although quite cliched) and the little fx detail is nice... but the bass... oh boy.

- Arrangement 27:
Basic layout/structure 17
The strongest point of the tune, although could had been shorter.

Overall sound/final eq 10
The bass destroys the whole mix. It's just overly loud and distorts/drowns out just about everything.

- Total 72
Pretty nice remix that's totally destroyed by the bass. Shame.

Plummet - Damaged (JayL Remix)

- Originality/creativity 20
Totally different from any other remix, has an eerie vibe to it.

- Sounds & fx 22:
Percussion 12
You can never go wrong with bongos and congas! But where are the crashes?

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
A collection of synths and pads, but nothing really stands out from the mix. And why is the lead panned to the left?

- Arrangement 35:
Basic layout/structure 20
The changes seem a bit sudden sometimes.

Overall sound/final eq 15
The synths should had been separated better, they sound a bit chaotic.

- Total 77
By far the most unique mix. The vocals were out of time here and there.

Plummet - Damaged (Lew D Remix)

- Originality/creativity 18
Makes the best use of the vocals. Starts off interestingly proggy but then the trance synths kick in...

- Sounds & fx 20:
Percussion 10
Standard stuff. The clap/snare isn't very good.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
I would had taken a proggier/minimal approach with the synths but there's nothing wrong with them as such.

- Arrangement 42:
Basic layout/structure 20
Pretty much spot on. Short and sweet.

Overall sound/final eq 22
Small touches in the EQ would had brought full points. Very good.

- Total 80
Hardly groundbreaking at any area but it works.

Plummet - Damaged (Nightflowers Remix)

- Originality/creativity 10
Pretty much as average as they come.

- Sounds & fx 18:
Percussion 8
Quite basic and do nothing for the tune. The clap is quite bad. The breakbeat loop in the middle is pretty good, though.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
Quite nice but again, pretty basic stuff.

- Arrangement 35:
Basic layout/structure 20
Well balanced throughout. Not too long, not too short and breaks are at the right time. The ending was quite sudden though, can't imagine any DJ being able to mix that.

Overall sound/final eq 15
Sounds a bit muddy. A bit too much shaved off from the top-end.

- Total 63
For some reason I'm not feeling this one at all. It's not bad, really... just very average.

Plummet - Damaged (Phorte Remix)

- Originality/creativity 18
Quite a sad vibe in this one, which is kind of rare in trance these days.

- Sounds & fx 22:
Percussion 10
Totally diggin' the electro influenced percs in the opening. Too bad they aren't used to their full potential and the rest of the percs are pretty basic.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 12
The pads are nice but there could be a bit more going on in the synth section...

- Arrangement 40:
Basic layout/structure 22
Solid as a rock.

Overall sound/final eq 18
Now I'm not entirely sure if it's just me but it seems like there's some white noise going on behind this track??

- Total 80
Quality tune but needs more looking into the perc and synth section.

Plummet - Damaged (Pjotr G Remix)

- Originality/creativity 20
Dark as , M.I.K.E. style. Me likes.

- Sounds & fx 27:
Percussion 15
This track is all about percussion. Must've taken some time to arrange all that.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 13
A bit plain on the synth front but then again this kinda stuff doesn't need them anyway. Nice 303.
The vocal needs to be brought out more, it's left a bit behind.

- Arrangement 42:
Basic layout/structure 20
Further developing of these elements would had made this tune longer, it falls a bit short as it is.

Overall sound/final eq 22
Maybe some slight high-end sparke would be in order?

- Total 89
Tweak the vocals and the structure a bit and you've got an absolute stormer.

Plummet - Damaged (Point Remix)

- Originality/creativity 12
So average in so many ways.

- Sounds & fx 23:
Percussion 13
Very detailed. Nice work.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
The synths are pretty standard fare and the vocal is out of time more than once.

- Arrangement 25:
Basic layout/structure 13
The intro is way too long and it tends to drag otherwise too... the second part is just pushing it too far.

Overall sound/final eq 12
Um... did someone forget the bass completely? I sure as hell can't hear any bass.

- Total 60
It's like the track was done first and the vocals were just slapped on top without any kind of thought.
Seems like a rushed job.

Plummet - Damaged (ProtoX Vocal Dub)

- Originality/creativity 17
I have no idea what genre this is supposed to be but it sure as hell isn't trance :)

- Sounds & fx 15:
Percussion 10
The 808 drums bring a nice old skool flavour to the mix, I just wish it would have something else too...

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 5
Nothing much to talk about here. A simple offbeat synth panned to the right (why??) and something that can only be described as a pad made from bass.
Nice work on the vocals, though.

- Arrangement 20:
Basic layout/structure 10
It just goes on and on and nothing happens... zzzz...

Overall sound/final eq 10
The total opposite of the Point Remix. I wish I could hear something from under all that bass.

- Total 52
Well... at least it's original...

Plummet - Damaged (Psy-T & Halcyon Complete Revision Mix)

- Originality/creativity 20
Has quite unique menacing vibe to it... There are just two words to describe this: "totally" and "different".

- Sounds & fx 27:
Percussion 12
Minimalistic but that's the way they're supposed to be.

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 15
Nice work on the vocals. The male chants are nice too (though I could swear I've heard them somewhere before).
It's minimalistic yet it has loads of stuff going on... Though the synth/bass/whatever it is only comes in after 7 minutes of minimalism?

- Arrangement 38:
Basic layout/structure 20
Sure, it's nice, it's just too damn long...

Overall sound/final eq 18
The main synth (?) is WAY too loud in the mix, otherwise it's spot on.

- Total 85
There's no real reason why the remix is so long. Cut 3 minutes of it and it'll be a lot tighter.

Plummet - Damaged (Syntagma Remix)

- Originality/creativity 15
If you've heard any uplifting trance in your life you'll know exactly how this goes. Not really sure whether that's a good or a bad thing.

- Sounds & fx 27:
Percussion 12
The kick is a tad too loud. Otherwise the percs are solid though not exactly groundbreaking...

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 15
The synths are really excellent and not at all what I was expecting.

- Arrangement 36:
Basic layout/structure 22
Standard uplifter structure.

Overall sound/final eq 14
There seems to be some distortion going on, mainly because the overly pounding beat. The vocal is also too loud and seems to be sitting "on top" of the whole mix.

- Total 78
The build is really massive but somehow the main part fails to meet the expectations.

Plummet - Damaged (Tezz Barker Remix)

- Originality/creativity 15
Pretty standard stuff again, no real surprises.

- Sounds & fx 20:
Percussion 10
Can you say "basic"?

Other (synths, bleeps, ...) 10
The bassline owes more than little to Gouryella. The constant synth (or is that supposed to be a pad???) gets on your nerves quite quickly.

- Arrangement 38:
Basic layout/structure 20
Industry standard works like a charm so why change it?

Overall sound/final eq 18
The bassline is too heavy compared to the quite weak kick.

- Total 73
The synth is really, really annoying. Shame, really, cause this could had been good otherwise.

-------------------

Anyhow, thanks to all involved, especially the judges (Pez, Mr. M :p and tor), and rb2k1, who did an amazing job with the hosting and the site, it was thanks to them that this all went ahead :)

Last, but not least ;), en2t. Well done buddy, you knocked fatboy off for once ;)

Great work people, and congratulations to all.

So when is the next one?

Right, I guess I used too much compression during mastering or maybe the kick just was to loud from the beginning. The thing is it sounds perfect on my system but when I heard it on a friends system, I noticed too much bass etc. But I already uploaded the mix then :(

True! Same as what I said on the kick, maybe I used too much compression. I never noticed the vocals to be too loud though. I will check that. As I will check the rest, I definately will do some re-mastering soon and I am sure the mix will be perfect then :)

That could be true. Although I gave my best to make the main lead etc. sound as 'big' as I could, by giving it some stereo spreading and stuff, so it would really sound 'wide'. But I usually suck at 'living up to expectations' or whatever :) After a massive build-up I should have did a better job in keeping that massiveness, I guess. But I'm happy with the 4th place and I will post the remix here again when I have re-mastered it.
Thanx for the comments!

lol I can imagine! Although I don't seem to have such a problem with this song as the rest of you guys. Ok, the original sucks but the vocals are quite nice imo...
