| Which would be better for making trance? The Korg EM-1 or the ES-1. |

Dude, the ES-1 is a sampler. I don't think it would be much of a useful tool to start production with. Maybe if you planned on making techno, but not for trance. As far as I'm aware, all it does is record sounds and let you play them back after running through some filters and effects.
At least the EM-1 has some synth sounds and drum sounds built in, but to be honest with you, neither really seem like they would be overly useful. For that amount of money, maybe you could have a look into some software. I mean. do you have any production equipment yet, cos just an electribe doesn't seem like its gonna do much for you.
So in answer to your question, the EM1, but as advice, I wouldn't get either. |

| Yup. Your absolute first piece of hardware (apart from the computer!) should probably be something like a Roland JP-8080. |

| Thanks for your input so far. Since money is very tight for me I really can't spend more than $400. What would be the best thing for me within $400. This will be my first piece of hardware and I prefer to get the hardware before I get software because I am getting a new computer soon and I will get some software then. |

for $400, there's not much you can get that is really going to be useful. The first thing you need is a computer. To me, its the cheapest and most effective way to sequence. You could go out and spend $x on a jp-8080 but you'd have nothing to play it with, nothing to record it with and nothing to sequence it with other stuff.
You need to get all the basics:
drums and percussion
synths
basic fx and mastering fx (even just some reverb, distortion, compressor)
a keyboard or something to create notes with.
There's more but this is the very basics.
My suggestion, wait till you get your computer and have a look around here about programs like fruity loops, reason and Cubase. Just search for these names in the forum, or go have a look around the web. There's too much to tell you. Personally, I think you should start with software and then move to hardware as you get the money. Good hardware is really expensive. About $1,500 and up for a decent synth. So paying 400 for an EM1, might be useful, but there are bettter places to spend your cash. |
