Speakers & Amp

Dj Nacht
Im sure this question has been asked before but I havent found any posts telling me exactly what I need. I have my turntables and my Dj Equipment and I produce techno using Orion. The thing is everything is connected to my 2 little computer speakers so you can imagine the sound I am getting. So Basicly im asking what do I need Audio equipment wise (speakers, amp,(*Preamp?). I want this stuff to be good quality and im willing to spend around 1000$ and maybe more if what you suggest is worth it. Keep in mind that this stuff has to be good for DJIng AND Producing since I am doing both. All this stuff will be being used in my bedroom so no freakin Crown Amp's connected to eachother so my house can explode and kill the neibhors.

Get yourself a pair of studio monitors. These will be accurate enough to cater for the production side of things, and of course will be fine for the DJing side of things too.

My recommendation is to get active monitors, which means the amp is built into the monitor housing so that you don't need a separate amp. As for what model, read some reviews, then (and this is important) go to a store armed with a couple of CDs you know really well and listen to them on the monitors you are thinking of buying. Ideally do a comparison in the store between different monitors, each at high and low volume. Then buy the ones you like the sound of the most - after all, you'll spend a lot of time listening to them! :)

Be careful. If you buy active monitors, you need an XLR output somewhere at the end of your audio chain (although some will take 1/4" as well). If your dj mixer has XLR outs, then run your computer's sound card into your dj mixer and then run the speakers off this.

My Absolute 4Ps have a standard phono input too :)

I withdrawl my comments then. Just check they have the connections you need.

I usually recommend the same thing to everyone, based on the personal experience I've had.

Get yourself a pair of Axiom M22ti speakers.

Unbelievable quality for a very reasonable price. $400 USD. Very neutral, flat frequency response, amazing detail.. they are perfect for use as monitors (i use them for producing and djing). Then of course you have other little incentives, like a choice of 4 colours (plus more colours if you want to spend alittle extra for custom finishes), free shipping in canada and US, and a 30 day full money back guarantee.

They are passive speakers so you'll need an amplifier. Just get something with 85+ watts per channel and you'll be fine. Any home stereo integrated amplifier or reciever should work, as there is little or no audible difference between amplifiers, until you get into the higher power ones (giving you more headroom). this should cost no more than $150 USD.

To complete the system you really need a subwoofer, especially for electronic music. It really depends how much you are willing to spend here.. the best subwoofers are undoubtebly SVS and HSU (for the price of course). $550.00 will get you a SVS 25-31PCi. $500 will get you a HSU VTF-2. Both of these will utterly destroy your house.. they'll start cracking the ceiling mouldings in your room, and pop the nails out of your wall. Thats how powerfull they are. If you think you dont need this much bass, there are afew decent cheaper subs floating around the market.

Oh, here's all the links you'll need:

Axiom M22ti
HSU vtf-2
SVS 25-31 PCi

Hope this helps. :thepirate
