help! my pitch is wavering near the notch on my mk2!

i bought one of my mk2s used from somebody, so i'm sure it's kinda old. now , when i put my pitch near the notch (for 0%), the light wavers on and off, but not only that, when i have the pitch anywhere close to the 0% notch, the light still wavers , and the pitch itelf wavers once in a while! it sounds really aweful. this is nooooot good.
what should i do? i want to maybe take it to somebody but i'm not sure where, and what to ask for.

don't ask me to fiddle w/ it myself, cuz i suck at electronics, and i would break it for sure...

thanx!
dJohn
You might have old pitch sliders....I bought my 1200s used, and the pitch isn't as perfect or precise as my friends' 1200 M3Ds...
I aske this a while ago, and everybody says that you just need to get new pitch controls, which can be bought off of pretty much any dj hardware site.
Try djmart.com or turntablelab.com
Hope this helps

i'm guessing it's possible that the groove in the actual pitch slider has somehow cracked or been widened. in which case i think there's no way of fixing that. but then again, i don't own an mk2........

check that its set to the correct power outlet.
when i bought my technics they were set to the Japanese power outtage and the pitch kept goin up and down

sounds like they need a calibration.

on Mk2s, the click in the center activates the equivelent of the m3d pitch reset button, which electrically locks the pitch at the zero point.

what happens, is the pitch fader gets out of calibration (either old and worn, or just not calibrated) - the real "zero" pitch point becomes somewhere outside that notch... so if the real zero point was below physical zero, [as you move the fader pitch fader to increase speed] you'd hit real zero (below the click) then increase above real zero, then get locked at real zero in the click, then increase suddenly more as you go past the click. I hope that makes sense.

how's the dots looking with the fader in the click, and does the green light light up?

if the deck itself is functioning properly, the dots (the 0% row) should be solid (not moving) with the fader in the click & green light on. If they are not, there are probably other problems.

if the dots are solid in the click and green light on, but you have problems otherwise, I'd recommend a calibration and replacement of the pitch fader.

regardless, replacing the pitch fader is probably smart when you have the decks serviced. They aren't expensive components, and They lose accuracy with age and wear like any fader does...

a nice crisp tight pitch fader is more enjoyable to spin on anyways :)

another thing to consider: replace it with a M3D pitch fader. no click! (I hate the stupid click, its annoying when your trying to beatmatch near 0%!)

edit: those DJ comics on your sig are freaking funny.. esp #10.

hey dknylady,

Unfortunately, the problem isn't precision adjustment, etc. (I own 2 1200mk2's and I've done quite a bit of research on tweaks, tricks, and mods.)

The 1200mk2 pitch slider wears out over time ESPECIALLY because of the notch in the 0 pitch spot. They made the mk3's with a constant pitch slider control specifically for this reason.

There are only 2 remedies to this problem:

1. (This one is way overkill and expensive with time and money but gets the job nonetheless) Replace the pitch slider. The pro's of this, like I said, is that it gets the job done, however, the con's: heavy use of the pitch slider over time (even a new one) will eventually kill the slider once again, and you'll end up with this same problem. Plus you'll have to pay for a new pitch slider, shipping, and getting some dude to fix it for you, who'll probably expect some cash, or a date out of you for his trouble.

2. (The better, and more fun way) With a little elbow grease, probably from a friend who's comfortable with taking things apart like a DJ buddy (everyone has one of these)... You can remove the notch in the pitch slider to create a constant pitch slider control like the mk3, thus fixing it and never having this problem ever again. The only con is that you'll never have a perfect indication that you're on the 0 pitch mark after this tweak. To me, this is way more acceptable then buying and installing a pitch slider. I never listen to records on the 0 pitch mark unless I get bored or something...

The instructions on how to do number 2 are right here:

I'd help you fix it... I've replaced the tonearm on one of my table, but I don't live anywhere near you, and I'd probably ask you out in return ;x

In any case, good luck.

There is a way to get rid of the click at zero, have to do a search for it though. I know that it includes a bit of sodering.
dknylady
wow thanx guys!
i will look into what you said, cyde...heheh...
i have TONS of dj buddies, and they are all guys (so, thus, better at electronics than i am) and i'm sure one of them can fix it.

question: does that light that lights up at the 0 mark come w/ the new pitch slider? cuz that burnt out...and i'm still getting aweful pitch wavering there..:(
MERiDiAN5i2
yup, light on at zero.

and cyde would be right, replacement time.

so is it possible to replace the mk2 pitch fader with the m3d part? or are the pinouts and/or physical specs different? I've heard it works, but i've never done it so cant say I know for sure.

if you have to replace it, might as well get one without the silly click :D

no the light doesnt come iwth the pitch slider...when you get a new pitch slider you have to desolder the old one from the little circuit board that has the light attached to it [dont worry its really easy i let my girlfriend do it for me] this is what you get when you buy a replacement pitch fader:

i do recall that there are ones that you can buy that comes with the board and light but im sure they cost more. you may just wanna go to radioshack and get a new light its really easy to put on. better yet... just mod your lights to blue : P

its just a light though if i didnt like tinkering with this stuff i would care less if the light is burned out becuase it really has no effect on sound so its something that i would be able to live without

Well if you're pretty confident with electronics you could go one step further on the mk3d replacement and drill a hole to the left of the slider and then put a complete mk3 pitch replacement in... Eg, also have the zero button that you can click. :D

I had a friend who was considering on doing this, should see if it worked.
