Buying a new PC - performance with software Q?

hi,

i am buying a new pc very soon. The pc i currently have struggles to run Reason 2 and Logic, it often stalls with the problem of too many instruments runnning.

i am just wondering as to what PCs some of you producers have and does Reason or Logic stall for you?

I am buying a 2.8Ghz processer with 1028MB RAM and a massive hard drive with a 52x CDRW, also with built in Audigy sound card.

can anyone give me any advice as to what i should get? i dont want to spend loads of money and then find out that even with a 2.8Ghz processor Reason will still stall!!!!!!!!!!

thanks guys - John

hey cheggy
A pentium IV 2.8 with a gig of ram should be heaps. I run a 1.8 with 512MB ram running all sorts of CPU munchers and its fine.

Only thing, if you plan on working with midi a lot, maybe ditch the audigy sound card and go for something with lower latency.

I'm running a P4 1.7GHz, 1028MB ram, and I can easily playback 30 tracks of audio in reason without any sort of problem. If I have 2 or 3 songs open, then I do notice alittle lag and it may stop playback. Also, if I set playback audio to 96,000 sample rate then I definately experience some lag and/or stalling.

I just found a magazine a few weeks ago that had an article about how to build a computer for electronic music producing.. unfortunately it cost $20 so i didnt buy it :stongue: I dont know the name of the mag, but if you're interested, go to any big bookstore and they might have it (it was the sept issue).

a 2.8Ghz processer with 1028MB RAM should handle reason without any problems at all.

cool, thanks guys! any more advice???

I was browsing the other day and saw that article too. I think it was either futuremusic or computermusic. They also showed you how to make everything quiet.

Futuremusic. I subscribe to it.

About the new computer...

Motherboard Gigabyte GA-8ST800 S478 533Mhz SiS648 8xAGP 3xDDR400 5xPCI 6xUSB2.0 Aud <-- I would consider what soundcard to get before selecting a board b/c there might be hardware conflicts. Check the sound card manufacturer's support section to insure no conflicts.

Consider getting a second smaller hard drive for your system files. You will get considerable performance increase. A 40GB 8MB cache Western Digital HD would be a good choice.

Get a better soundcard and a pair of monitors because headphones don't cut it sonically.
