Napster News
2001.6.28
.....................................................

A lot has been happening at Napster and we'd like to bring you up to date.
We're hard at work on the new service, which will launch later this summer
(more about that soon). We're really excited about it and think you will
be, too. In the meantime, there has been a major change to the current
service that you need to know about.

We've been working tirelessly to meet the court's requirement that Napster
block access to files that copyright holders have asked us to exclude from
the Community. To be as thorough as possible, we employed filtering
technologies that often blocked more files than were noticed by copyright
holders. If we hadn't done so, the court, at the continued urging of the
major record companies, may have shut Napster down.

We've now developed more sophisticated filtering tools based on a new
file-identification technology that uses "acoustic fingerprinting." This
technology will allow us to identify more accurately the works shared in the
Napster Community and to block the music that we have received notices on
(as the 9th Circuit has required). In the long run, this process will
improve the Napster experience. It is also an important element of our new
system that will pay artists when their works are shared through Napster.

We launched our new application using this technology last week, and as of
Wednesday, June 27, we're no longer supporting earlier versions of the
Napster application.

We know that this new technology has resulted in a temporary but dramatic
decrease in the number of files available in the Napster Community. That's
because we're having to fine tune and verify a technology that has never
been implemented on such a scale before. As we continue to refine the
system, we will be able to identify more files faster. As more users upgrade
to the new versions and more files are identified, more music will become
available through Napster. When you download the new application and log on,
you're strengthening the Napster Community.

In the meantime, one sure way to find great new music is to check out the
Featured Music tracks in our Discover section. There are new selections
each week and hundreds of tracks in the archives in a wide range of musical
genres. All the established and emerging artists whose works are featured,
from Dave Matthews Band to Deltron 3030 to Keoki to Sigur Ros, support file
sharing and the Napster Community.

The steps we're taking are critical in moving the Napster Community forward.
Now as much as ever, Napster's strength depends on our Community. Please
download the latest version of Napster from the link below, and tell your
friends to do the same.

We appreciate your support. And thanks for sharing.

Basically all this is saying is that Napster has released a new version of it's program (with better filters that aren't restricting words like "remix" and such) and that the other versions of Napster won't be able to be used any more.

Just thought I'd update u ex-Napster users about what's been going on. I'm going to try the new version out for awhile, see if I can find some of the stuff we're usually searching for ;)
