Anyone know any really good tips/ secrets to making those awesome bar long hooks like in Sasha & Digweed's Always and New Order's Confusion?

They are real bouncy and follow musical principal, but I juz cun'
figure dat one oot.

Hard hitting hooks are MAAD.

C1-C2-0-C1-C2-0-C1-C2-0-C1-C2-0-C1-C2-0-C1-C2-0-

C1 stands for the lowest note, C2 stands for the highest note (if there is only two notes in your chord) and 0 stands for a break...

if you have three notes you go like this ( C3 is now the highest note)

C1-C3-0-C1-C2-0-C1-C3-0-C1-C2-0-C1-C3-0-C1-C2-C3-

this is fruityloops c1 goes into the first button thingie, and c2 in the next, then a empty one and the just go on...
hey cheggy
by hook do you mean melody. I think the key to the 1 bar patterns is making them flow into eachother, so that it doesn't sound like the same pattern being repeated over and over but rather a flowing melody. Often, starting the melody before the first kick can help it to flow like this.

Have a listen to Confusion and you'll see what I mean. There is a note in the melody before the first kick. You get what I mean. Other than that, those little i bar doobies are just a bit of luck. You come up with something cool or you're mucking around something cool comes out.

Good man cheggy... thats the one thing I have not noticed. I can come up with nice melodies but they dont connect so the pattern restarts and don't flow.

Looks like yer going for an arp there DJ Alfi. I'll check that out, see what it sounds like.

Mmm and a tip from me as well, when developing a hook, use classic musical principals - they apply to everything.

Aight, usually I just hear the loop 1000 times in a row and mess with it until it sounds like crap b/c of over development.

SO, rather than trashing it, I'll post it.

What do you think? It's just a demo of the hook, so once the beats developed its gonna go like that for another minute.

Just want to know what y'all think of this hook. Any and all observations welcome.

wow, that definitely sounds interesting. Really nice hook and I think it won't get boring.
But I do miss some low end sounds in the hook. Maybe you should add some, or create a more distinct bassline.

that's all I can say, Nice Job!
:p
dbl
yeah, it sounds nice :)

but some low end sounds in the hook would be nice like illicit said
djglacial
Thanks guys, that sounds like a good idea. I'll post the song when it's done.

Hey, thats really nice. But i think the arpeg. doesnt fit the rest of the sound of the track. The drums and bass are really well mixed/mastered, and i would really like to know you approach :gsmile:

I find that hillarious, as I trashed the drums and the bass for that track, maybe because they didn't fit the ARP! ;).

Few of my instruments enter the same panning space, and I use about 3 of each type of percussion except the kick. I may even have two kicks sometimes to use as ghosts and add punch, but not in this one.

Except for the hats and main snare/clap/woodblock/whathaveyou, all my percussion follows a simmilar pattern and tries to compliment the other drums. For example, ad a louder tambourine right before a hat or a reverse snare before a clap for a "sha-smack".

Aside from that, to keep the drums from interfering with the rest of the instruments I tone down the low pitches using a parametric equalizer, unless I want low tone toms. Some people dont like this because they like the full range hihats, but any hat with major freqs below 500hz sound muddy to me.

Most of the drums are humanized and I always have a shuffle.

As for my bass, it is really simple. I don't layer bass very much b/c the 3x osc in Fruity Loops and some chorus does an OK job of that. I make a very wide range bass and EQ down everything but subbass and the areas around 250, 400, 1000 and the high pitches (5000+hz). This hollows out the bass for the other instruments, while keeping it rather punchy (eyeseternal.mp3 is not a great example of that, that bass was mellow with a slowed attack but the same eq). The kick takes the oppositesettings in the eq from the bass. My techniques aren't as simple as that but thats what they ammount to.

Of course you have to tweak everything for individual songs; it's not automatic.

And that's my lifes story. Hope it does something for you.
