i don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but all these tracks have a very similar sound and it just works everytime...
Holden - Nothing/A Break In The Clouds
Sasha - Wavy Gravy/Bloodlock/Cloud Cuckoo (Practically everything on Airdrawndagger)
James Talk - Eggs Are Cute
Sasha - Cloud Cuckoo (Luke Chable Mix)
Luke Chable & Bonicci - Ride
Maurice & Noble - Hoochie Coochie Man
well maybe those aren't all the good song this year hehehe...but these have been very well recieved i think. anyway, they all have that ambient chimey feel to them (hopefully that made sense). anyone have any suggestions on making that sound. is it just the atmosphere that does it or how about that piano/bell-like synth. any ideas on how to create a similar sound?? |

another one that maybe should be mentioned in this type of songs is the G&D remix of beautifull things with andain...
I think the secret to this sound is using sounds that sound similar to real instruments (or even better, use real instruments) :)
then of course there's much small effects in the background too....and that's just lots and lots of thinking and puzzeling :) |

I definitely understand what you mean. I have been searching for this sound too. It all started with the track by James Holden, they all got that sound IMO.
That bell-like synth sound can be created by using sine waves and ring modulators. James Holden uses it a lot. It sounds great. And I think the atmosphere of these tracks is created by heavy delay on the synth. Just take a minute to listen to Bloodlock for example, or Holden's remix of It's a Fine Day and A Break In The Clouds. The synths on these songs have quite a lot of delay on it. So I guess this is one of the things that account for the great atmosphere.
I would really like to know how James Holden creates those awesome basslines like in Bloodlock. Does anyone has any suggestions?

yeah...i know what you mean. another person that i forgot to mention is Markus Schulz...all of his recent production/remixes have that quality to them. i think that it makes amazing summerish tunes. and i definitely agree i think a lot of this starts with james holden. the first track i remember hearing with that sound was bloodlock (i believe co-produced by holden hence the sound)...anyway i think they definitely also have a lot of reverb on them as well...they always sound so far off and dream-like...lets try to listen to the sound and try and analyze whats going on...

i think the key to that bass sound that you mentioned iLLicit is that it is taken up a lot of space in the mix. being that the synths are higher up on frequency scale...i think that the bassline has more middle in them then a lot of other tunes do. i mean the hi hats and other percussion used also sit in the higher frequency range so that leaves a lot of middle to be added to the kick and bassline making them sound fuller... |

It's been opined that this type of thing is in fact not trance but Deep House. A friend played stuff like this to me and called it deep house and said he was into that whole scene. I said "Sounds like trance to me." He said "No, this is a whole other thing. Trust me, DJs are really picky, they'll tell you which is which."
House? Trance? or snobbery for its own sake? Your thoughts... |

personally i don't care what its called...i like the sound. getting caught up in genres is retarded...listen to whats good hehehe :D i think some dj's probably like to think they know it all and that is what the whole naming convention is about... |

Deep House!?! Your friend seriously doesn't know where he is talking about. All these tunez are definitely trance, although they have evolved quite a bit from the standard trance. But Deep House? No, definitely not. If you want to find out what deep house is, go to my web-page and listen to some of my mixes, then you'll understand what Deep House really is...
And I think Floorfiller is right about the bassline in Bloodlock. It uses quite a lot of mid. But I personally think it has also quite some low, a lot actually. But the bassline doesn't seem to interfere with the kick in anyway. This is a nice job from Sasha and Holden.
We still didn't find out what the bassline is made of. Any ideas? |

it's progressive house. eventually trancy (IMO)
I'm more interested on Holden's basslines than synths tho. Even if I'd love to know what he used to make the synth in Solstice. The guy is a genious in FX's and creating an atmosphere too.
I bet this kind of sound you're all talking about is gonna become over-used in the near future though :\ people are starting to copy Holden a lot |

Paranoik0 is definitely right about people copying Holden's sound. I think the best example of this is PQM - You Are Sleeping (PQM Meets Luke Chable Vocal pass). It definitely has a Holden feel over it.
But I think James Holden will survive. He will discover a new sound to use I think. Holden has used this particular sound in a lot of tracks recently. So maybe he has 'over-used' it himself?

not trying to be a ass. When i first started producing i used to try to make the same sounds as other artist. I would really suggest making your own sounds, its much more fun. |

Thanks Xfer...:rolleyes: We were just commenting on Holden's sound. The guys above were praising him for coming up with that sound. It's not easy using Sine Wave & Ring Modulation. Nobody said they want to copy it. Infact, this is the perfect example of how one guy made his own sound and went with it. :D |
