Stereo Spread

Okay, I know what panning is and how to do it, and I think I get what stereo spreading is, but could someone just explain it to me to make sure I've got the right idea, and more importantly, tell me how to do it (using cubase SX).

as far as I know cubase itself doesn't have a plugin for stereospreading but if you happen to have the waves plugins I think they got something called S1 imager wich can do the job for ya :)
just remember that the more spread you use the less punch and power the song will get so don't overdo it :) |

maybe i have the wrong idea about this but...i thought that stereo spread was a result of just setting the frequencies of the sounds apart? you know so everything is on its at its own frequency giving it that clear sound? is that not it?
as always waves plugins are da bomb...i wish i had them...and i WILL have them someday hehe... |

Cheers mate. Yeah, we have the waves plugins here. Forgot about that plugin. Thanks for the reminder. |

My understanding of stereo spreading is just to place different sounds at different places in the stereo field in order to bring out the sounds more. This is particularly useful for percussions; if you have 11 percussive layers that are all centred it will just sound like a jumbled mess, but with careful use of the stereo channels it'll sound great.
This is incredibly easy to do in buzz; each machine has stereo control built in so you can adjust to your heart's content. |

floorfiller: what your'e thinking of is clean frequencies, not stereospread :)
well one sort of stereospreading is like dj-sean described it but there's also one kind where you do the stereospread on the whole mix (this is often done in the mastering...)
I can't really come up with a good way of explaining it but if you see an image of S1 you would understand it better :) |

so i know this isn't exactly what you meant vizay, but dj-sean makes it sounds sort of like panning. you put some sounds over there and some sounds over to other parts of the mix?? |

my terminology is far from official =) |

I think the idea is that rather than panning, where it goes either left, or right, stereo spreading lets it go left and right and you determine how far left and right it goes. So neither side is dominant but rather the sound is spread out to the sides of the stereo spectrum.
Maybe? |

Never been a big fan of the stereospread plugins myself (even the good ones). If your sounds are big enough and you use the panoramic spectrum properly, you shouldn't need to use a plugin to give a mix the illusion of width. I find they can really ruin the punch of a mix... |
