Cool link.
I did not realize 1984 was public domain already.
I own a copy in book form myself, and since it still can be found for around 5 or 6 dollars I would still recommend that format to anyone who wants to read the whole thing, it is cheaper than a ream of paper to print it out. Not to mention ink :D
But it is nice to know if I want to grab semi-obscure quotes from the book I can and not have to type for a day and a half :D

Sweet, you sure the riaa swat team isn't going to be breaking down my door? They probably have the audiobook copyrighted and consider this a copyright violation heh. Bastards. Thnx for the link johnsmith.

Has Animal Farm and 1984 in HTML and .pdf formats.
Public Domain rocks :D
We should start a "books you should read that are in the public domain' thread and make it sticky :D

Congrats John Smith!
As far as I know, copyrights are good for the life of the author plus 25 years. So 25 years after the death of the author. Since old Orwell died a long time ago (I think it was 70s) it sould be in public domain indeed. |

BTW speaking of 1984
I know how the connection between the USA, and especially the new Homeland Secuirty legislation bring comparisons to this title, but I think it is a bit of worked.
Form my understanding, I believe the country that repersents the best Orwellian nightmare is actually North Korea... any takers? |

North Korean regime will implode and explode at the first chance, kind of east German regime.
The 1984 Oceania was a regime designed to last forever. I can't really put it in words atm, but the USare going straight to an orwellian regime/model, well at least that the masses wouldn't care about, won't feel it coming, like in the book. When I think about the American democracy, I really see a snake with two heads, each candidate saying almost the same thing, and one of the two guaranteed to win, keeping what the last govt "voted" and pursuing with the same ideas with a different flavor of the last govt., implementing them if not in the first term, then the second. Before getting "thrown" out and the cycle starts again. |

ya thats good and its all been said before.
But with North Korea.. how patriotic are its citizens? Do we and can we ever know?
Think about it from childhood they grow w/ constant propaganda blasting to them throughout their lifetime. They are completely cut-off from the world. They don't have any outside influence (especially the poor which is the majoirty) or exposure. They have 3 TV stations, all state run. I don't know, but I could see me even in such a horrible environment (how would I know its horrible w/out comparison?) propagaded day and night to be very patriotic to Commy NK.
edit: oh and another 1984 thing - they are always at a continual state of war too with their Southern neighbors. I'm sure the common NK has vast misconceptions and incorrect depictions of the South Koreans. |
