Hmm...have you ever even used XP? I have never been able to crash it, unlike Windows 98 which I would crash at least 3 times a day.

What is the good of a extremely powerful PC if it has any sort of Windows on it (especially XP)?

I would have to say the opposite. I run winxp and the last time my computer crashed was what.. 4 or 5 months ago, due to videocard problems, not os problems. last time I've seen a blue screen? probably a year. also due to videocard issues (which were easily solved). the worst thing that really happens is every 2 months or so winamp will freez when its loaded. but you know what? you can exit it, boot it up again, and continue on like nothing has happend. max 4-5 second loss of time.

now mac osx... i had to use it in school. for random reasons my appication would suddenly exit without any notice. i remember working in final cut, and the mac closed the program 4 times in one 75 min class, making it nearly impossible to work properly.

that is why I reccomend you know what's going on with your computer. Problems like that (like Final Cut), is A. The computer has been on for 2 weeks straight...which is not good for any computer. or B. There is something installed poorly into the OS.

Every person I have ever known that has a Mac has never had the OS shut down on them, and rarely has the program closing problem.

One other thing, most typically, when 1 program freezes in XP (Not Responding), your whole OS locks up. Not the case w/ OS X, that's why they have the program shut down feature.

I've got a Mac and I'm always getting frustrated with programs closing for no reason, slow-downs and crashes... and the worst thing, the compatibility issues. The G5's probably more stable though...

Hey, im looking to get a new computer, and I was wondering what I should get. I have been looking at a G5 with the dual 2 ghz. The only problem is that it is very pricey. The other one that I would like is the new AMD 64. Are there any recommendations?? Does anyone have any tests that compare the two against each other? I will use my computer mostly for gaming, internet, movies, and hopefully editing my own movies. Thanx for the help

I like games so I would personally get an athlon 64.

Um, when a program freezes up on XP I just ctrl+alt+del it and end the program. My entire OS has never locked up. I leave my computer on for months at a time without a reboot and have never came across a major problem.

The Athlon 64 chip isn't amazingly fast, it's just really fast. Now if you're referring to the Athlon 64 FX, that's a different story...

If you plan on getting the 64-bit version of WinXP, and using any 64-bit apps that come out in the next 2 years, get the Athlon 64. If not, then just go get yourself a 2.4C P4. You don't need the Athlon 64 or P4 EE or the Prescott (which currently sucks mind you).

Also, don't get an Apple. Why? No, not because the machine sucks. It's actually a very nice machine (if you ignore the biased benchmarks they used to score it against a dual Xeon). I say no simply because it's an overpriced POS. So why is it a POS all of a sudden? Because it's overpriced, that's why. It's like going out and getting a 3.2C P4 right now for 1000 bucks, just for the chip... Sure it's fast, but at what price?

EDIT: btw, in my two years of using XP on two seperate computers, I've had only 2 serious crashes, both of which were recovered from within 10 minutes. Blue screen? Quite frankly I haven't seen a single one with XP. And don't think I'm not a power user, cuz you can bet I am...

I am not going to say "buy a G5" or "get the Athlon" because you should get which computer you are most comfortable with and which is best for the job that you do.

I can give you a little advice on cost though. While yes, you can get a top of the line PC from Dell (I do not compare home built to Apple products because there is no warranty etc thus it is an unfair comparison) for $500 less (I just did a quick check) than the Dual 2GHz G5, the average "life" of a Macintosh is greater than that of a PC. I buy a new mac on 4 year cycles and am still able to run at least 90% of all applications I use very well. I forsee being able to keep my Dual 500 G4 running even longer than 4 years (it is 3 years old now) Most PC users need to replace their computers on a 2-3 year cycle to "keep up".

The bottom line is this (in my opinion):
Choose the best tool for the job. Neither a PC nor a mac is a POS but they are different machines.

If you are using the computer primarily for playing games, writing papers, and listening to mp3s then save some dough and buy a PC.

If you are going to do a lot of video, audio, and image editing then I think you will be served best by the G5.

I do not own a PC currently because I cannot afford it, but my next computer purchase will be a Dell laptop so I can run AutoCAD and some other windows only software for work because it is the best tool for that job.
