| I built my own, and I'd say thats the way to go. You can build something to the exact specifications of what you desire in a machine. You can rarely get that with something someone else made. |

well. from my personal experience ...
- Dell Laptops are well built. The peripherals die quickly, but the laptops themselves are solid.
- Panasonic Toughbook ... Indestructable .... pricey laptops but worth it if you travel a lot.
- Anything HP SUCKS
- Toshiba ... depends, but mainly bad ... as far as the laptops go.

I must say I voted for Apple since i have had no problems with my G4 (and I am slightly biased)
As far as overall quality for PC's goes...IBM and Dell both make very good quality products in their business and portable lines. IBM's consumer line (Aptiva) has some problems and I know that my mom had a bad experience with a second dell she ordered for home. But overall Dell will give you a good quality machine on all levels.
Servers I would go IBM's running linux hands down.

| I'm using an Apple... that's not what I'd rather use tho, and I've not got much experience with other computers... so I can't really answer well. |
