Well, guys. I've finally got my cable modem installed and hooked up 2day. All i have to ask is....
-What kinds of programs / files / patches are essential to get right now before I do any damage w/ my downloading capabilities ? (security, video players, unzip, superb mp3 players, etc)
I have a 850mhZ cpu, 40 gig HD, 128 MB RAM, windows 98 (lol)
It can be anything really, but mainly something that will be important for future use! Mainly protection wise to my cpu or entertainment. Whatever really. Please help |

get AVG anti-virus and Tiny Personal Firewall...both are free and do their jobs pretty well...other good firewalls are sybase and zonealarm, which are also free, but i've had probs with those before...u will also need an ftp program prolly, get smartftp (free again, lol)...dont forget UltimateZip for ur compression needs (did i mention that its freeware?? :D)...aaannnd finally check the microsoft site for security patches if u're using IE...then u mite decide to get sum p2p software and chat clients and so on
EDIT: dont forget winamp (v 2.9 - dont get 3.0)...and also get windows media player...and maybe quicktime...realplayer sucks
and dont forget the following as well-
pop-up stopper - stop those annoying pop-ups
ad-aware 6.0 personal - get rid of spyware
spybot search and destroy - get rid of spyware
and they're all free, too |

| download Sygate firewall its free and simple and very powerfull, patch all your OS systems all the time, and use proxys your laughing, |

| Some good Anti-Virus software and a router would be best, and use windows updates every now and then :) |

or do what 90% of home windows users do, download it :D
btw pc-cillin 2003 works quite well, the firewall built into it is quite useful as well. |
