Professional Mastering Techniques

i was wondering if anyone has had any kind of experience in learning this. what i'm talking about is making a track sound less amateurish.

well, let's see, the first step is to make sure to cover the full frequency spectrum, so that the song sounds more 'complete.'

secondly, very seldom allow for a completely silent moment, so that means reverb.

but how do you make a song sound professional? i'm trying equalizing the final output and adding some compression there, too, but it's not working out just right.

one thing that i noticed in some tracks is that producers make a certain instrument, like a quiet hi-hat, output only to the left or right channel, let's say.

any ideas/experiences to share? :thepirate
